★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Been camping in Papamoa for the last two years, we thought Russell would be a nice change of scenery. It’s a nice location, close to town centre and the beach but that’s about it.
The tent sites are so small and cramped. We had no space to park our car on our spot, we had to park offsite.
Also having a curfew or “quiet time” at 1230am on New Years Eve is ridiculous! Couldn’t even have our radio on the lowest volume because it had to be turned off. We weren’t roudy or anything and if we were I think others would’ve been understanding as it was New Years eve!
Every night other than New Years has a 1030pm quiet time - which we were aware of, but we didn’t expect staff would be on patrol every night walking around flashing their torches at us to make sure all radios are turned right off and that we use our “quiet voice” to speak to each other- basically felt like we were being told to go to bed.
Very strict campsite, felt like we were in a school camp rather than on a family holiday. . Thanks for the change of experience Russell top 10 but I think we will return to Papamoa next year.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Was meant to be a family holiday, we booked for 3 nights with 5 families and were devastated when our children were sworn at twice by the owner as the children were sweeping and off the jumping pillow. The owner then proceeded to throw the broom and brake this. Several attempts made by us to get an apology and to replace our broom. Will never go back and ruined our birthday celebrations.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Friendly welcome on arrival. The powered RV sites were nice and flat (especially handy when its pooring rain) All ameneties where available (kitchen, bbq, toilets and showers). All was fine for our stay, but there were some things we didnt like: the toilets had a urine smell and a lot of times people left skidmarks in the toilet (this was more depending on the type of people staying there during our stay). The showers were time managed (a good way to preserve water, but annoying if you want/need to shower longer), so 5min wait after 5min shower. Also, the showers were small and the knob to set the temperature wasn't that great. Unfortunately during our stay it was very wet (due to rain and the high himidity), so all out clothes were wet and unable to dry. Great playground (for kids over 5yo). Couldn't really comment on the service, so solid 3.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Bit disappointing to be honest after reading other reviews and staying at other superior top 10 sites.
We checked out three pitches but all were off level by 2-3 degrees so leveling chocks are required. We have a small well behaved dog. So were confined to the “dog section”. Not sure why when the park and the dog section isn’t full you end up with a pitch next to another vehicles rather than spaced out. During peak season you wouldn’t easily get out of your pitch if you had a Camper van or RV and wanted to leave for the day as no access path / road between pitches they all backed onto each other. We struggled with a van opposite with a kitchen tent and a RV next to us so had to drive over other sites to return after a day out, which wouldn’t be possible if the park was full. The park is mainly open plan with little privacy between pitches.
We did ask to up grade to a deluxe pitch as no one else was parked on these sites so didn’t think our dog would be a issue and didn’t mind paying extra but this wasn’t possible due to our dog.
The showers in the ladies one at the far end the thermostat just rotate freely with no heat control, the second shower I only got cold out with any pressure and with the thermostat on hot it dribbles out the shower head. The third shower I tried took a minute for warm water to come through not great when on a five minute timer. Lucky it’s wasn’t busy so I could find a working shower.
Pros good location for Russell township and Long Bay Beach, the staff were friendly.
