★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Just beautiful bush and fabulous birdlife, love this walk. Saw bats flying around above the carpark one evening so cool! Can hear kiwi here too.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ One of the most amazing places. A tiny campsite by a stream, in a prehistoric feeling forest, even the insects look and sound primeval. No one around for miles and miles. Probably not a spot for peopke from town that scare easily, as no one else here. Night time walks looking and listening for Kiwi. Longtail bat watching at dusk. A long drop toilet and fresh river water. Bring supplies, nearest shop is 30k away. This place is a real must for nature lovers. If you're brave enough take SH38 from the coast and drive through mountain bush and past NZ's deepest lake. Its a metal road, steep, windy, massive drops, one lane mostly, but if you have ever wondered what the view from a top of a mountain looks like but will never climb one, then take this road.
