★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The birds on this wharf are Shags (not to be confused with the blue penguin colony further down the road). It's one of the larger Shag nesting sites.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Pretty neat old wharf, unfortunately you cannot walk out there but it’s worth a look

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Sumpter wharf is an old, condemned wharf. You can't walk on it as it's too dangerous.
This has made it a haven for Sea Shags who hang out on it all day. At anytime of day you can go and see hundreds of them gathered along the old wharf. But the best time to go is the evening, from about an hour before sunset when there's literally thousands of them packed into every square cm of the wharf, it's unreal.
If you like birds, or you're a nature photographer, it's well worth checking out. Likewise if you're going to the Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony experience you should stop by here first.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Old wharf full of shags.
Best place in Otago to see these birds is right here apparently.
Wharf is in danger of falling apart. But council can't figure out how to monetize the bird life here so doesn't want to do anything to the wharf to preserve it.
Enjoy the bird life and the wharf while they last. As one day neither will be there.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Just a scenic spot that is populated at sunrise and sunset by a plethora of birds that are apparently shags even though everyone calls them penguins. Unfortunately I'm not an Ornithologist so I was just there for the views and to chill (literately as it was really cold).

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Never seen so many Sea Shags altogether. Pretty unique sight. A nice elderly gentleman had told us to head farther down the road to see the seals relaxing after their hunt
