★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Agra was a fabulous host, she took us to see penguin viewpoint and was run off her feet to make sure all of her guests were completely happy with their stay. There's a reason they call her a hostel mum!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Posting on behalf of a friend who stayed here this weekend - DO NOT EVER BOOK HERE. The host was incredibly rude and discriminating, just because SHE got the date wrong and wasn’t expecting them. She flew off into a huge rant and rage, and reduced my friend to tears with her prejudice. This woman should not be running a hostel - unsure how this place has such good reviews.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Best hostel host/mum ever. It's a quiet small hostel but you feel like home within your arriving. She shows you around town and tells you the best places to see penguins at night in town. Definitely worth for a night or two.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Within 5 minutes of arriving, the owner was driving us round the town giving us a tour of all the best places. This included a local insider brief on how to see all the little blue penguins running around town and returning to their nests. The result being a great night of free penguin watching that was better than the tourist trap down the road where you pay $50 to watch the penguins return. She also encouraged all the guests to socialise and we ended up making some great friends who we then travelled with for three more days. Other bonuses were hot chocolate, ice cream and coke... Not sure if they'll always be available.
Plus to round it all off, the big group of us who went penguin watching, returned to hot water bottles in our beds because the owner had noticed that it had been raining for most of the night and was rather cold. Thankyou Agra. Won't find a hostel owner like this again.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The hostel owner is an old woman who at first seemed nice. She welcomed me and we had a chat. She showed me around town and told be the best spot to view pinguins in a ethical way. I stayed in the hostel for a couple of days in January 2020. Everthing was nice...
But then it changed i began to notice that she treated 'asian people' differently. She was not polite to 'asian people' (im european and i recognized it). She kept telling me that she always had trouble with 'asian people'. And she even started shouting at two guest from south-korea because in her opinion they took to many showers. (she did not write or tell anyone how many showers were allowed). As she spoke to them she didnt use their names (which she did as she spoke to me) but she called them both Korea in a denegrating tone.The next day a guest from china arrived but after one houer he was forced to leave by the owner because according to her 'he was not good for the admosphere'. They had a extreme discussion and it ended with the owner shouting while the chinese guy was crying and hurrying into his car. I tried to help him but it was not possible to change the owners opinion. I do NOT recommend staying in this hostel.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I stayed here for a around a week a few years ago. Agra (owner) and her dog Lika were very friendly and gave me heartwarming welcome. It was definitely one of my best experience in my stay in New Zealand.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ It's my third time staying at Swaggers and every time I find myself more entertained by Agra's unique character. I am sure that some people would find her confronting, but her endless wisdom, if you can get close to it, is priceless.
