About The Importer

About Us

The Importer has been bringing quality Furniture, and unique Homewares to Kiwi homes for over 20 years! In 1993 we began as a small store in Tauranga selling everything from Pins to Elephants, and such was the name of our store. Pins to Elephants wanted to have a huge range of items at great rates, and slowly the range began to include only items from the home. With this change in ranges and all of the items now being sourced overseas the name became The Importer.

The Importer now has 6 stores, and the online store which allows the majority of Kiwis to have access to the range of items that will help transform their home to a paradise of colour, charm and wonder. Our eclectic mix of products matches well with New Zealanders, as with our country so remote we all love to travel and see the wonders of the world.

Many of The Importers products have been featured in the Press and Home Interior magazines such as Your Home & Garden, Homestyle, HOME and also on The Block NZ television show.

On the website customers can browse the catalogue and experience the unique & everchanging mix of products offered instore, with delivery arranged to your home. We order a large variety of items in small quantities, so if you like something - it is best to grab one before they go! However if an item you like is sold out, please contact us as we may be able to track one down through our stores, or tell you if they are coming back in. Alternatively just call your nearest friendly staff at one of our many locations! ...Enjoy.

Sustainability

At The Importer we are always aware of the environment and the impact we have as a company. We source our furniture through suppliers who buy wood solely from government approved sustainable forests, and recycled timbers are used where possible. Many items of ours are antiques, which means they are made many years ago and refinished to their original state. Other key choices are of the recycling of all packaging materials such as cardboard and paper. Plastic bags have also largely been replaced instore with eco-bags which are re-useable for our customers. We also keep core values of fair trade and only source from government approved factories which we have visited ourselves to ensure quality products from companies creating mainly handmade items, under good working conditions and pay rates.

Our Website

All payments are made securely on our website with paymentexpress or you can also pay by bank deposit. We also have a Lay-by option instore - this is 25% deposit and 6 weeks to pay. We try our best to make all information on our website as accurate as possible, for further information please refer to our website terms page.

I am totally amazed at the lack of customer service offered by this company. I originally ordered two pieces of furniture by phone and first thing next morning I asked to cancel the order and to have the charge reversed on my credit card. That started a series of phone calls and emails (emails only accepted by Head Office obviously they don’t want to interact with the public). I was told they didn't accept "returns" on furniture - the furniture hadn’t left their store. I was told they could have sold the two pieces to someone else - the receipt is dated 4.22 pm and they close at 5pm. My first call to them was at 9.10 the next morning. Don't think that argument stacks up. They sent me a "Gift Voucher" while we were still having discussions about the furniture. Totally useless as I live in Wellington and they are in Tauranga. Eventually in despair I agreed to take the furniture to be told that they had sold the couch. Surely they broke the contract with me then. I was then told that the furniture would be picked up on February 4 and on February 11 after calling the carriers I found it still hadn't left the shop. I’m never going back to that retailer. It is without doubt the very worst experience I have ever had with a retailer. Customer service – it’s non existent at The Importer

From out of state for work in Tauranga recently and a family friend of mine who has been coming here for years told me about The Importer. So I made the decision to have a look. From the outside it was a little nondescript but, as I entered It had a warm and lovely atmosphere and from the onset, the staff were very nice and welcoming. A great variety of textiles and homeware. Beautiful displays and clean. The stunning lady who assisted me was very patient and knowledgeable with their products. Spent well over 40 mins in the store with her and I didn't feel pressured to buy anything or uneasy the whole time. Overall, I very much liked my experience and I see why my friend has been coming here for many years. Love!

I went into this store today searching for some dining room furniture. The staff were super friendly and welcoming. One of the lady's whose name was Jade went over and above her duties to help assist me. I will definitely be coming back to search for more goodies for my new home.

No customer service at all! I would have given zero star rating if I had the option. I went to this store to raise my concern over a faulty product and the shop assistant called Jade was not prepared to listen to the problem at all. She knew I was coming into the store that day as there was several attempts to raise the issue by emails as she said this is how the store owners can be made aware of any problems and the owners have the authority to deal with it. Nobody responded or even acknowledged the emails at all. Then I went back to the store and asked whether someone checked the email. I also brought back what I purchased to show her the defects. All this shop assistant said to me was "it is over 6 months, I can't do anything ". I wanted to speak to the management. "The manage would have said the same thing, can't do anything for product purchased over 6 months. Mind you these goods are all from China. What do you expect? You need to leave the store now," she said. I insisted to speak to the management and she threatened to call the police. I was not going to leave the store as all I wanted from her is a way to speak to the management. Then she CALLED THE POLICE! The policeman thought the call was ridiculous and agreed with me (I spoke to him over the phone). It is very reasonable that a customer wants to speak to the management! Then Jade changed her story saying she was the assistant manager. Anyway, I am definitely not going back to this store due to lack of customer service. Excuse me, due to NO CUSTOMER SERVICE at all!

Wow is all that I can say, and not on a good way. Totally ignored by the two shop assistants today while they gossiped about the customer they had just served, and not in flattering way either. They clearly judged / profiled me as not to waste their precious empty shop time on. The sad thing is that I know neither of these entitled stuck up trolls are the owners. Shame no positive customer experience to be had here. Some beautiful pieces though

What fantastic service. Looked in this shop while on holiday. Loved the cabinet but had to wait to go back home to make sure our tv fitted on it. Contacted Sheree who got quotes for shipping it to Wellington. Amazing communication. Thank you so much. Will keep an eye out for a shelving unit in the same style. Regards, Kerry
