The Theatre Royal Hotel is a little gem. We have stayed in both the Miner's Cottages and the hotel rooms and they are clean, comfortable and bursting with character. Meal at the pub was great. We will always choose here if travelling south or just want to spend time on the coast.

They've done an outstanding job renovating and decorating this place. It's like stepping back in time. Brilliant bar and restaurant, including great vegetarian and vegan options. It's well worth staying here if you get a chance, you won't be disappointed.

We have stayed here previously and our recent visit was as wonderful. Lovely room and super comfortable bed. The staff were so accommodating and although we arrived at 8pm, I had phoned ahead and they had a meal waiting for us. We will always stay here when in the area.

I stayed in their backpackers cottage across the road and visited the pub/restaurant for meals and refreshments. Excellent service and very friendly and professional staff. Good food and drink and huge portions! Historical building, nicely restored. Outdoor seating area was great, too!

We stayed at the Undertakers; good room with a comfortable bed in a nicely restored building. Remarkably inexpensive, the best value stay we've had in NZ since returning four years ago. The owners are to be congratulated for what they've done to the Theatre Royal and the other houses that have been renovated. I've usually driven through Kumara in the past but the town is well worth a stop, even if it's just to read the history display boards. We ate at the restaurant; having seen the size of other people's meals we chose to share one meal - a good decision.

We were a party of eight (4 mature couples). We tookthe bed, breakfast and dinner package which was excellent value and quality. Lunch was great too. Very comfortable bed. staff were very welcoming and helpful. The hotel has a lovely atmosphere and safe parking for our hired e bikes. Would definitely revisit if in the area.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the hotel. The staff are very pleasant and helpful. Room was clean and bed very comfortable. We weren't very hungry, so shared a pizza - very good! Got to chat with locals in the bar, always a highlight. Will highly recommend! Thank you

I stayed overnight in the "Undertakers Cottage" and loved the character of the place. Not hard to feel at home. Upgraded bathroom/laundry facilities and very generous kitchen/lounge area. Comfortable bed and good size bedrooms. Off street parking. The staff at the beautiful historic Theatre Royal across the road, are helpful and friendly. Food is great! Highly recommended.
