About Totally Tarawera
Totally Tarawera is a whānau (family) owned and operated business here at Lake Tarawera in Rotorua, New Zealand.
We take great pride in warmly welcoming manuhiri (visitors) to our region. Manaakitanga (hospitality) is one of the core values that drives the way we do business especially on our own tribal lands here at Tarawera. As hosts, we care for our customers and our team as our own whānau.
Our tourism roots extend back to when our ancestors were the guides for many of the first Europeans coming to visit New Zealand’s first tourism attraction, the “Pink and White Terraces,” then considered the Eighth Wonder of the World. Karen, our Head Guide, is a granddaughter of Sofia – one of Rotorua’s most famous local tourism guides. Tourism allows us to host manuhiri, reconnect with our roto (lakes), ngāmaunga (mountain) and provide lasting memories for our customers.
Through our storytelling based experiences we are also able to share one of our tribe’s most precious treasures –the stories of our traditions.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We used the water taxi to go to the hot water beach. We got such a warm welcome at the office and a bit of historic back ground on Tarawera mountain. The scenery to and at the beach is breathtaking. We did a short hike and then went to soak in the water while taking in the scenery. There is an amazing glamping camp which we will have to go back to for a few days stay. Friendly and down to earth skipper operating the water taxi. We will be back and recommend this as a must to when you are in the area. Check out Totally Tarawera for all they have to offer.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ My partner and I stayed at the Totally Tarawera Kanuka glamping site. It was beyond gorgeous, one of our favourite weekends away to date.
The team were so accommodating and lovely.
Would highly recommend the glamping with this company, the types of views and nature money cant pay for.
11/10 from us.

Avoid long holiday weekend if you want peace during the day as there were lots of other boats around. Evenings were magic though. We'll book again for next year at the other glamping site which is more private...

Received a timely reminder of the prompt arrival of the boat - very reassuring - lovely boat ride back and shuttle back to the car. A great experience thank you.

Efficient shuttle service from the carpark, great boat ride on Dave's water taxi, stunning views and a magic destination in the beach/campsite. ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Really enjoyed our hosts talk on the history of the area. We did the Ultimate Day activity. We had the taxi take us out to the 3.5 hour walk up to Tarawera Falls. So beautiful and we had the place to ourselves. Even had a swim in the swimming hole on the way back to the jetty. We were picked up again for a 30 minute cruise around and had another swim at the hot pools in the bush. Magical. Will book the Clamping accommodation next time and swim at hot water beach.
