β β β β β You can witness just how deviating Kauri dieback truly is and witness it first hand!
We found this by mistake last winter and enjoyed it then.
I went back again to take more photos using my film camera.
A short walk can take a few hours when you stop to take photos.

β β β β β Some seriously large Kauri here and it is part of a 20 minute circular Bush walk on a boardwalk. Tranquil quiet birdsong - plaques with native tree details. The toilets are on the right just at the end of the ramp to the information shelter. Don't leave valuables in plain sight lock your vehicle. Well worth the side trip to get here. More enjoyable than the 50 metre walk at Tane Mahuta. Remember to look for the Weta display (unhook the bark door) next to the poem.

β β β β β Great place to spot kiwis in the wild. The loop walk takes you through the historic kauri forest. Easy walk. Campsite has both powered and non powered sites. There's a map of where you should put your tent. Better to book online but if you're lucky you can get a spot on the day(need cash to pay). Campsite is located adjacent to the park and you can hear the birds distinctly- kiwis, morepoks (owls). The kitchen has electric hot tops (inductive), no gas. Kitchen was also equipped with a refrigerator, toaster and a kettle. Some red paper could be found in the kitchen for the normal torches (make sure you have your own red light source). There's a very high chance of spotting a kiwi be patient and enter when its dark.. please stick to the path. Enjoy spotting a kiwi in the wild! I

β β β β β This place is pretty isolated but when we were there, there was a big family playing games on the field before the walk. Going on the walk is quite emotional because you get to see first hand some Kauri's dying. To see such beautiful giants in that condition is disappointing, but overall seeing the Kauri trees is spectacular. There are so many Kauri's on the walk, however after the long, twisty drive into the park, going on the walk is pretty tiring, so I would definitely recommend bringing snacks and maybe even lunch before you go. There are seats there, but you should probably take a picnic blanket with you too.

β β β β β Douch bag taking up two parking spaces. Campers brought the very big dog to the site. Disappointing behaviour in not respecting others or the environment.

β β β β β A nice, easy and peaceful walk through the park, with a great collection of small and giant Kauri trees before you, and at every turn.

β β β β β On our first camping trip to this site, we stumbled along the visitors book and read that you can see kiwi's at night. That night once it went dark we headed out, and this short walk then took us over 4 hours as we listened to the kiwis call and move around in the bush close to you. The following week we drove back with Flash lights that were covered in red cellophane (the kiwis do not notice the red light) and sat on the walking track all night watching as the kiwis' come up so close that you could almost touch them! Every now and then we make a round trip (3+ hrs drive each way) just to watch them for a few hours. This is an absolute gem and a must do experience
