This classic steam tug was one of the last of her kind. Originally named the Aucklander, she was delivered from Scotland all the way to Auckland in 1958.

She spent years towing and ship handling around the Auckland port until she was replaced by the technology of new engines. In 1986, a Wellington businessman by the name of Clem Griffiths purchased her to establish Wellington’s first and only floating restaurant.

After renaming the vessel Tapuhi II, the “Tugboat on the Bay” restaurant opened to the public at Oriental Bay in 1992. She’s undergone quite a few changes over the years, but to this day she continues to float proudly.

Now under new management, we hope to provide you with friendly service, delicious food and the best views of the harbour!

Come eat, drink and relax – you’re always welcome on our boat.

Great food with a great view! Very good value! Easy to spot the boat if you're strolling along the bay area. Vin, the owner, friendly guy committed to delivering quality food! Highly recommend for anyone visiting Wellington.

Food and experience was average based on price, still good tasting food though... Sitting outside was nice. First time we have dined here not bad overall.

A nice atmosphere for an afternoon tea. Soothing to be on the boat looking out at sea. The food and drinks are fine but the friendly staff invites a return.

A delightful place to take the family, especially on a warm sunny day to ensure a great view of Wellington harbour from the Bow of the boat. While there aren't many vegan dishes available, the staff are happy to accommodate. I had a big breakfast (as photographed). All it really needed was some baked beans to complete it. Definitely will return on my next Wellington visit. My children loved their vege pizza.

I finally found a proper diner style breakfast. Super friendly folks and great food. The house made spring rolls are crispy and juicy, delicious. I can't wait to take my family and friends to Boat Cafe.

I was so impressed. We stumbled upon the Boat Cafe because our usual spot was closed and I'm pleasantly surprised. Great views, great friendly service and delicious fish and chips. Coming here again!

My lil sis and I popped in for brunch as we hadn't had breakfast. We both ordered starters of garlic bread and spring rolls and steak meals with salad. It was quite tasty. Both enjoyed our meal and the friendly informative service. We do admit that we may have started to feel a little full after the starters and our large milkshakes! Always enjoy the friendly and helpful service alongside the delicious food served. Until we meet again Thanks ????
