★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Great atmosphere, nice surroundings and a pretty good menu, that was taken to the next level with the Specials of the Day. I went for the ribs and the wife had the Carbonara. When I got the ribs the portion I got compared to what another table got seemed really small, however, despite the portion size it was the perfect amount for me - the ribs were tender and with just a gentle amount of coaxing came away from the bone, having the sauce in a bowl with the meal was a nice touch instead of being smothered all over it on arrival. The chips were hot nd crispy/crunchy which was a pleasant surprise and the salad to go with it was divine. The Carbonara has a strong cheese hit and we couldn't work out what it was but it was full of flavor and with plenty of sauce to go with it was a nice meal, it was also a huge portion size which I wasn't expecting. Well done DB on the meals. The only let down was it took some time for the meals to come out and I noticed that other tables that arrived after us were getting their meals first, however, we were part of a 12-14 person table so understandably their was going to be a delay but a definite 4.75 stars with only a quarter star off for the delay. Desert was nice, we had the Cream Puffs with ice cream and the cheesecake with fruit and both were a very nice way to finish off the meal. I would definitely go back again and perhaps try either the steak or the Lamb rack as they both looked good as others had ordered them.
The staff were really friendly and accommodating, they even asked if I was okay while I was standing off to the side stretching the legs and hip. Well done whanau keep up the good work! I usually like to take photos of the food but it was my first visit here and I was a little distracted.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ First time there for four out of five of us. Amazing ? food. The seafood chowder dishes were so nice. Our mains were just something else. Three ? meals perfectly cooked, Tai chilly chicken was just spiced enough and so creamy, both, fish linguini and pasta. Dishes were soooo nice. We were trying all each others Kai. Thank you. The service is friendly and fast.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Absolutely delicious food, very big portions so you'll have lunch for the next day. Excellent pricing for what you get. A good place to take a date or a nice place for a birthday dinner with the family. The atmosphere was excellent too.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Sunday brunch here was seriously up there with the best of restaurant's with that extra touch of class firstly in the wonderful service, comfortable seating and table position.
Did not meet the chef Frances, who cooked a real top class big breakfast, I mean it, absolutely Devine, beautifully presented by waitresses to match.
Whakatane must be so proud of the meals and service here.
I highly recommend this place to anyone who appreciates the best.

Came in for dinner last night but we hadn't booked a table, friendly guy on front of house offered us a table even though they were very full. Ordered our meals but unfortunately the fries were stone cold, i don't usually complain about stuff like that but they were really cold. Asked for fresh fries and they bought them to our table very quickly and apologized. Both meals were delicious and good value. Friendly and attentive staff makes all the difference.
Will definitely be back.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We happened upon Detour for a meal back on 18 Jan when we were staying at Ohope for two nights. The food was incredible! The staff were attentive, the vibe was relaxed and we had a really wonderful night out as a result. Needless to say we were back there for dinner the following night by mutual (wordless) consent and again, we were not disappointed. If we lived locally we'd be dining here every week! Special shout-out to the rack of lamb and seafood linguine - both absolutely superb and the former perfectly cooked medium-rare right through to the last mouthful.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Have visited Detour several times during my stay in Whakatane. Food, drinks and service are consistently fantastic, with the staff always friendly and great at what the do. Food is fab and the cocktail specials list puts the the cities to shame (Bailey's espresso martini for $12!!!). Still coming back here over and over, has failed to disappoint yet (and I really should have taken more photos ?).
