Amazing hike! Definitely make sure you're prepared and have enough stuff with you (water, snacks, clothes). Some of the most incredible views. Highlight for me was seeing the Emerald Lakes from above.

This is a beautiful walk but don't underestimate the challenge. Prepare well, bring food, water, warm clothes, shoes with good grip and hiking poles. You'll need them all.

The best experience ever. Breathtaking landscapes every minutes. Don't forget to look back sometimes. There will be another stunning sceneries in different ways. Even though you have to take this place slowly, please don't give up! You are able to see those landscapes only here! [Tips] * Since it is one way crossing, the shuttle must be arranged. * It would take between 6 and 8 hours. * I have put a sunblock cream 4 times during the cross, but I got serious sunburn on my right shoulder. ( I usually get tanned not sunburnt.) A hat or UV block products are MUST in summer. * It is quite windy at the top. I didn't need a windproof jacket, but I had to use earmuffs. * The top part is quite slippery due to sand. It will be much dangerous in winter with frost or snow. * Lots of people said they had experienced 4 seasons. So be prepared. Hope this helps and you enjoy Tongariro!

The walk was stunning. We had a group of 4 and took two cars hoping to avoid the ($35 per person shuttle) by parking one at the finish but it's all set up to avoid doing this. The carpark had a four hour limit and the 6km road leading there is marked with no parking signs. There was a worker around asking how long we expected to park so we knew we'd get stung with parking over the four hour limit - despite an almost empty car park. Thankfully the parking issues didn't take away from the breath taking views that took our group (all in their 20s) 6 hours to complete.

Absolutely amazing walk definitely worth the trip down. Definitely do your research prior to walking this in regards to weather and what you need to take and booking a shuttle beforehand as there a parking time limits of 4hours on each end. There is a fb group specifically for the Tongariro crossing highly recommend joining it

Incredible day hike! We booked the shuttle at 7am. We could see Mt Taranaki in the distance while walking up. Unfortunately there was a big cloud climbing up the Red Crater, although it was clear again coming down to the Emerald Lakes! It took us (both 25, reasonably fit) seven hours to complete the hike with several breaks and photo stops.
