Absolute stunner and truly deserving of the "great walk" title. It's quite an easy walk but the cold is deceptive so be prepared with the right gear. I think this can be completed in about 6 hours. I recommend taking your time to look at the epic rock formations and enjoy the walk. Not every day you can visit a volcano

We went there with friends last May this year. It was surreal and wonderful experience. Difficult but All worth the 19.5Km hike. The Emerald Lake is so majestic and to all the LOTR fandom- you will much appreciate it when you witness the true beauty of - Land of Mordor ? You will see Mt. Doom too! Take lots of photos, ? take your time to look at the breathtaking views. ? Tip: check the weather ahead. should go with groups/ with friends (hike will be much easier) look after each other. Brought 1L of water only that was enough for me.. Wear hiking/trail shoes, get ready with the changing weather as you go up , bring poncho in case it’ll rain. Good luck! ? “it’s not about the strength, it’s the spirit, Just go and climb , Pack light”

Just did the crossing yesterday, Certainly a challenging hike, so make sure you‘re well equipped and physically fit. Not a beginners Hike. Make sure you have: Enough Water, Snacks, Gloves, at least two layers of clothing plus a spare sweater if you’re getting cold, Rain gear, sunscreen, insect repellent, head torch and powerbank to charge your phone, hiking poles, raincocer for your backpack. Also book yourself into one of the many accomodation providers at the National park Township, also get the shuttle service to get to the two Carparks. Allow you for the next day to rest aswell.

I did this route and I loved it so much! Such a magnificent and unique view. The colors are amazing. I believe everyone who visits this country, must do this track.

an amazing walk and a great experience! wear a lot of layers to keep warm/be able to cool down. once you start going down at the end (through the bush) it seems to take a long time, but it is so so worth it. i definitely recommend having a walking pole and good footwear.

If you're a Kiwi (or anyone for that matter) that has been wondering whether or not you should do this walk- do it. I'm telling you now; it's not easy; it's straight up and then straight down, brutal on the knees. But if you've got it in you, it's worth it and a real achievement. We went in February 2021, the perfect day, barely anyone around, no snow yet. Don't start the walk if you see the weather is turning; it's just not worth it and dangerous. We had someone who dropped us off and picked us up, but if you don't have that luxury, there are many shuttle services in need of some business after COVID. We stayed in the family rooms, which are part of the Chateau but not inside it. They were an excellent place to stay for an early start for our walk.

I went there by myself on a quiet day. I probably only saw 20 hikers through the whole walk. It was surreal and amazing experience to see craters and volcanic lakes in so close distance. You can’t tell this from any of video and photo. To check up the weather, make sure to check the red crater temperature, wind chill temperature and freezing level on MetService. 2L water at least, a lot of sunscreen, lip stick, warm clothes/hat/gloves, food/snacks and waking pole are essential. All temporary toilets are taken out before the Winter season, so plan your toilet stops wisely. Unfortunately, the day I walked was the day even without any notice on DOC or poster. If you want to enjoy this hike, do uphill exercise more, you won’t feel too much challenges afterwards. In May, it could be quite frosty and slippery.

A really beautiful walk to see the bright blue crater lakes and volcanoes. I thought the flat area was like another planet -like the images of Mars. The walk takes less than a day, is really popular and the views are out of this world. I once tried doing this walk in April and we got caught in a snow storm and couldn't complete the walk. So I went back some years later in the warmer season (Feb) it was really hot and the most amazing walk I have ever done in New Zealand.
