THE TEAM

Jano Bistro is owned and operated by couple Pierre-Alain Fenoux and Diana Goh, and our passionate and dedicated team, Kunal, Brooke and Akshara - our little Jano family. Born in the Savoie region of France (the ‘Alpes’), Pierre has worked and trained as a Chef since the age of 14. His fine-dining career developed his love for creating exciting, delicious food using quality produce and innovative techniques. His journey led him to NZ in 2010 where he later met Diana, a fellow foodie with a background in fashion and business. Both wanted to create something special and design a life together, and in 2014 they took the plunge and opened Jano Bistro.

inspiration & PHILOSOPHY

The restaurant is named after Pierre’s grandfather, Jeannot Fenoux, who was nicknamed Jano (“jah-no). Jeannot was the community gardener of his township, Aix Les Bains, France, and he and his wife, Manette, grew a large garden where Pierre spent most of his childhood harvesting and cooking with his mum and grandparents. Other fond memories include early morning foraging adventures with his grandfather, gathering mushrooms, snails, and freshwater crayfish. From nose-to-tail and root-to-tip, Pierre learnt that almost every part of a plant or animal can be utilized and to value and respect nature’s offerings. Food preparation in their home was never a chore, and meal times were always a celebration. These memories and experiences inspired Pierre to become a chef, and it is a dream to be able to share his cuisine with you.

At Jano, our menu change frequently and spontaneously depicted by what Mother Nature brings into our kitchen, and minimising wastage is important to us. We grow our own little herb garden, and love showcasing our local farms and producers, and try to use free-range, organic and sustainably-sourced ingredients where possible.

Absolutely stunning night at Jano a few months ago!! The regular restaurant manager was away so we were lucky enough to have the owner explain the dishes and pairings to us and he was amazing! So passionate, knowledgeable, relatable, and made us feel so welcome and excited about the experience. Not to mention the food and wine were absolutely to die for, the talent involved in the kitchen is very obvious. I was very sceptical about the price being worth it but honestly say I think it is

We went to Jano for the first time and wasn't disappointed, it completely lives up to the hype. I said to the waitress that I didn't have the right words for describing this beautiful food. Pierre, the head chef and his crew was excellent. Pierre says he changes the menu every 4-6 weeks, so no two experiences will be the same.

Everyone must do this at least once in their life. We had a 9 course meal with wine to compliment each course. It was absolute luxury and the staff were totally amazing! The chefs came and introduced the courses they had prepared and it felt like a very special experience. I would totally recommend this truly wonderful place.

If you love food, art, creativity and being treated like royalty, then Jano Bistro is the place to go! (especially if you are vegetarian, and feel discouraged by the options at other places) Somehow Jano Bistro managed to create 9 unique vegetarian dishes, all laden with so much thought, preparation and beautiful ingredients. We are a humble mother and daughter who rarely dine out, (this was a birthday treat) but the staff made us feel comfortable and warmly welcomed the entire time. The Bistro itself is cozy, unassuming, unpretentious, and laid out well. We were served our delicious pieces of edible art by the chefs, who explained everything. It was so interesting hearing the stories behind the food.. they must be so busy in that kitchen, but take time to serve you without appearing stressed at all! The flavors and textures were incredible. There were elements that you would never expect to go together, but which created a party in our mouths! We loved the taste, texture, design and artistry in everything. Each dish had various beautiful creations. Thank you Jano Bistro for a memorable experience

A superb dining experience. One of Wellington's fine dining highlights. We visited on the Thursday and enjoyed the slightly cheaper 'tasting' menu. Food, flavours, presentation and service out of this world. Even the pre-dinner cocktail showed unique care and attention to detail. (Sami mixes available). I had the first ever, in my experience, whisky cocktail which enhanced the whisky rather than wasting it: "Whisky & Wai" Described as "Suntory 'Toki' whisky, orange and sparkling Wai manuka". I have experienced Noma, Logan Brown, and an early predecessor restaurant at this address (Petit Lyon) and this experience was the equal of all of them. For illustrative purposes, the menu for our visit was: Snacks BBQ Zucchini, Macadamia, Chickpea, Mint Match: Rippon Estate Riesling 2019 (Central Otaqo, NZ) Line Caught Kahawai, Green Bean, Nectarine, Seaweed Match. Hawkes Ridges "The Wild Rose" 2021 (Hawkes Bay, NZ) (With Stewart Island Scampi + $15) Easterbrook Farm Duck, Plum, Daikon, Orange, Tarragon & Jano's Homemade Sourdough Bread Match: Domaine Louis Jadot Pinot Noir 2019 (Burgundy, Fr) replaced on the night by a Montepulciano grape from the Hawkes Bay (We added the Cheese Course +18pp / +30pp inc. match) * Kapiti Kikorangi, Cherry, Pistachio, Red Onion, Buckwheat Match: Romain Paire La Colline en Flamme St Romain 2019 (Loire Valley, Fr) Apricot, Coconut, Flight Coffee, Sesame Match: Churton Petit Manseng 2018 (Marlborough, NZ) - a slightly botyritised dessert wine. Treats What this place delights in is providing beautiful in mouth combinations of texture, flavour and aroma.

A beautiful 9 course degustation with great service and optional wine pairing. The menu changes based on seasonal produce. The chefs bring the food out to your table themselves to explain what's on your plate and how it was prepared. A great little find in central Wellington and highly recommended.

This is an experience. Yes, it is expensive and you will spend over 2 hrs there, but the staff makes you feel special and you know that what you're tasting is well crafted. It wasn't pretentious as many fine-dining places tend to be. The skills and quality of produce shows and it makes it definitely worth it.
