About Kiwi Campers Auckland
“I hired a Toyota Hiace for 53 days for me alone from 1 March – 22 April, 2016. It was exactly what I expected to get, when hiring a 17-year-old campervan – you can see that many people used it before. But that’s no problem for me.
All tanks were full and the car was clean when I picked it up. Had also been fresh serviced – perfect! The car runs with petrol and needs between 12,5 – 14 liters/100km. Everything worked perfectly and I had no problems – just had to exchange the fuse for the waterpump which cost $3.
Car is certified self-contained, which is very helpful for the countless free camping areas. Picked it up and dropped it off in Christchurch – very helpful and friendly staff there. Because I had to wait a little bit when picking it up, I got a GPS for free for the whole 53 days! Was a very good experience with Kiwi Campers and would choose this company again. Nothing to complain about – a straight 10!” – Georg H, Australia
“Arriving in New Zealand after a long flight from Toronto, Canada, we were greeted by a friendly representative from Kiwi Campers. After checking in, and completing the paper work, we were shown all the features of our campervan and how they all worked. Before driving away, we discovered the air conditioning in the vehicle did not work. The Kiwi Campers technician found the problem and needed 3 hours to make the repairs. In the mean time, they provided us with a car so that we could begin our sight seeing and not lose any time for the minor inconvenience.
When we returned to the depot, the campervan was ready and waiting for us. I must say that we were a little apprehensive due to the age and mileage of the vehicle but it performed flawlessly for the 6 weeks that we enjoyed its use. On our first morning, we found that the coffee press had a small crack in it and after a quick phone call we were asked to purchase a new one and would be reimbursed on our return. All in all, we had a great time traveling throughout New Zealand and our vehicle made it much more enjoyable. I would recommend Kiwi Campers to anyone traveling in New Zealand” – Harold, Canada
“Overall, an excellent experience. Kiwi Campers is a friendly and helpful company. Good value baseline – 45 NZD during low season. Basic, but functional, facilities. All equipment provided. Van easy to drive and good mileage.
We rented the camper for five weeks in June/July. Overall it was a fantastic experience. There were three of us, for three weeks, and then only two for the final two weeks. We were able to cover the majority of the North and South Islands in that time. Kiwi Campers is a fantastic company – they had no problem with us picking up and dropping off the van a few days early. Molly, the GM at the Auckland depot, was really helpful and talked us through all we needed to know before we set off. She was always easy to contact, too.
The van was a 3 berth campervan. It was a tight squeeze for three but had no problems at all. More than enough space for two people. Facilities are basic but do the job. Two gas hobs and a grill which are great for cooking up a pasta or a curry. Electric toaster and kettle also provided for when plugged into mains.
Bed and bedding very comfortable. All bedding, cutlery, cooking equipment, towels etc. was provided. Despite being there in winter, we were never cold in bed. Condensation was sometimes a problem in the morning but was quickly resolved because the A/C was very good.
The van, which is probably 10-years-old max, was easy to drive and we didn’t have any problems. Can be difficult to drive when windy. We totaled 6,000 km by the end of the trip. Good mileage too.” – Kylie, United Kingdom
“Great experience! The service we received was spot on. The employees, that we worked with, were very helpful and ready to help when we asked. Even included a shuttle to the airport and some great tips on places to see. Only wish we had more time. The campervan was good. A bit older but that’s okay – no issues with any equipment. Thanks for a great trip and we would suggest this company to anyone looking for a stress free holiday.” – Patrick, Germany
“Great service! Stayed late to wait for us because our flight was delayed. Very happy with our self-contained, 4 berth motorhome – easy to drive and a comfy bed!” – David, United Kingdom
“We can highly recommend Kiwi Campers. The vehicle was beyond our expectations. We did 3,000km in 2 weeks and the car went perfectly. The customer service was great, too. Molly is very competent and incredibly helpful. She even delivered my camera (which I left in the camper on our return) to my home in Auckland, personally. Thanks Molly! That was really outstanding.” – Bernd, Germany

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I would never use this lot again. I booked last June to arrive in February. The first camper they have me was an old transit, dirty and disgusting. They offered me compensation before I sent off, for a months travel.
The engine blew up on the motorway 10 miles down the road.
I was towed back, the only other available vehicle left, was a very small camper. I had no choice.
But I returned it a week early, ruined a very expensive holiday. The refund didn't compensate for the trouble and ruined vacation.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Picking up earlier from the Auckland branch sooner than booked and it didnt seem any trouble. This allowed us to get on the road sooner. Molly was brilliant, really helpful and gave some great tips about where to go and stay. The camper itself was excellent. Not one fault with it. People complain that these things have high mileage but they are so well looked after that there is no concern. Not one grumble from it. Would 100% use them again when we explore the South Island

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We had rented a Kiwi Dart 2 Berth model for three weeks and had a great time with it. The interieur was not brand new, but in good condition and very practical. Also, we loved the comfortable bed. Yes, the campervan had some technical issues, but nothing that one might consider dangerous or a holiday's ruin.
When we returned the van in Christchurch, we got the chance to objectively explain the problems we faced on our road trip. The employee and her manager reacted in a very professional, friendly and understanding way and offered a refund, too. Since both parties considered the amount fair, we quickly came to an agreement.
We would book at Kiwi Campers again.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We were worried about renting our van after reading the bad reviews but we had the BEST time in our van for our honeymoon!!
Picked up our 2 berth Volkswagen Kiwi Camper in Auckland and we were off within an hour. We had 3 weeks of driving around north and South Island and driven over 4110km with no breakdowns or major problems. Car did struggle going uphill because we had full tanks of water and diesel, so don’t fill up full tank of water unless if you are freedom camping a lot! The interior is out dated but totally liveable and the bed is actually quite comfy! The design was spacious inside compared to the other campers we’ve seen. And on one rainy day, we had a few leaks, but nothing that ruined our honeymoon. We only had one question whilst we were away and the staff were really easy and helpful on the phone. We were actually quite sad to hand the van back on our last day in Christchurch. Would definitely recommend them. Thank you for a great and memorable road trip Kiwi Camper!!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Wanted to post on here because I had read some real horror stories ahead of our dream holiday to New Zealand and was worried about this company’s ethics in the beginning after reading the reviews online.
It appears the very rude members of staff have been given the boot and have been replaced. All our calls were answered immediately, even on a Sunday, professionally and in a timely manner.
My partner and I rented a camper with them for 2 weeks, we had an issue with our first camper (said issue caused by us misfuelling) and they sent out a newer model, even though we were 6 hours drive away and only had us pay a modest excess. Staff were all really helpful and professional, and we would recommend Kiwi Campers again because of the price and value. The manager of the Auckland branch gave us a ride to the train station after we dropped off our van which was a really nice touch to finish off such a brilliant holiday. Thank you!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ New Zealand... a paradise in Earth.
Happy/Kiwi Campers... the worst experience ever with a company that SHOULD offer services and assistance.
At a first glance the camper (Happy 2 ST) did not seem well: all the mosquito nets were broken, the back door sometimes didn't open from the front, the interior and the bedding were dirty, the water pump sounds noisy...
After 100 km and then every 100 - 150 km the vehicle lights an engine light and accelerator stops working, it was necessary to switch the engine off and on again during driving. That was a bit dangerous during our journey, in particular when the street was not plain.
After 800 km (the 4th day) the engine has broken (another problem, different from the first one) and we lost a morning waiting the truck that pick us to Queenstown. Calling Happy Campers after several tries (nobody answered the phone) they told us WE have to find an accomodation in town and the camper would have been ready next day, although the mechanic told us that he would not be able to repair it without spare parts. It was hard to find an accomodation for the evening because everything was full booked, we found a place 3km from town centre. Next day we have called Happy Campers and, as mechanic said, they told us that the vehicle would not have been ready until Monday (they said changing camper was impossible), that WE should search for a car rental and rent a car until Monday. If I were a serious agency I would have looked for an accomodation and for a rental for my customers, not leaving them to themselves. We were a bit worried because next Thursday we had to be at Picton for embarking to Wellington. At Queenstown we rent a car and our journey goes on around the town. We had reached the beginning of the west coast but not so far because we have to return the car to Queenstown on Monday. On Monday afternoon we return the car to car rental and take the camper from the garage. We had to drive so long without many stops because of the ferry date. We were 100 km from Queenstown when the first accelerator problem showed up again, so we stops and stay an entire morning at mechanic in Haast. He said he needs some parts to resolve the problem. For him we would continue our journey with that problem turning engine off and on when the warning light comes out.
In addition to engine problems, after 2 showers on the camper the water pump stopped working (it was very noisy from the first day...), so we had to stop every evening at campsites for use water (for shower and washing dishes).
The only positive thing about rental experience with Happy/Kiwi Campers is that they refunded us (after 15 days, and after our reminder because they had lost our credit card details) for the lost days, for the nights in the hotels and for the substitute car rental.
Happy/Kiwi Campers aside, our journey was awesome, New Zealand is breathtaking!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Avoid by all means
Had booked a "Happier 3" half year before holidays.
Had filled in "pre-registration form" few days before intended pick up.
Arrived at "Happy Campers" in Auckland on time.
Were told that our car would require a quick wash and was asked to get the introduction immediately to save time.
Was shown a car covered by spider web. First impression already not good, why the heck did I take my time for pre-registration?
There were few "Happier 3" camper vans ready and I asked “why not one of those?”
"Not your van", was the reply.
We continued car inspection: few dents, chipped paint... still normal for older cars.
Worse were "micro cracks" on tires due long storage on flat tires. This car hadn't been moved for months! Quickly decreasing user battery voltage confirmed this.
Then the "no-go" item: Rear door was deformed completely so that it did not close properly. Result was water damage of interior. This car would have water ingress when driving on wet roads. Opening the door we were greeted by moldy smell. Biggest fear was having exhaust fumes entering the car while driving. This damaged rear door poses a safety risk due carbon monoxide poisoning!
On further inspection we found that there was no microwave installed like all "Happier 3" supposed to have.
I queried this fact and was told our van was a "Happier 3" without microwave.
When I refused to accept this car as it was clearly not what we had booked and there were serious defects posing health risks to the occupants we were offered a $10/day discount or a free cancellation.
Due to the mentioned safety concerns and the fact that we wanted to have a five week happy holiday in a 'not mold smelling' car I opted for free cancellation.
"Molly", the manager then pronounced proudly to all other customers (in the meantime there were a good dozen waiting to be attended) "how stupid we were as we would not be able to get any other camper in Auckland, she would cash in our deposit and rent the car to other desperate holiday makers".
Her behavior was not only rude, also completely unacceptable.
Around six couples had gathered in the untidy messy office with worn out couch and plastic chairs. There were two very friendly students on holiday work visa attending the customers. Problem was that they seemed authorized to do the check-in procedure only. For even the slightest deviation they needed the authorization from "Molly".
But "Molly" was extremely busy: I overheard that one car had broken down in Queenstown and she tried to find a mechanic in that area, then she tried to order six batteries for cars having run out of electricity, another van required her attention as it faulty rear lights. The phone kept ringing and all staff were too busy to pick up the phone. Good luck to anybody requiring "Happy Camper’s" assistance while on the road.
Not to spoil our holiday trip with a big fight we just walked out, took a Uber car to the competition a few blocks away and managed to get a brand new "Sprinter" van.
That was luck :)
But: I am still awaiting the refund of the deposit from the company "Adventiv Ltd" managed by Ulf Colbatz.
During phone calls and emails he still insisted that the car offered was a "Happier 3"... which surely was not the case. Referring to the car damage he said that would be a problem of "Happy Campers", not his.
I had no choice than to:
- report "Happy Campers" for fraud information on their website (car missing the equipment as advertised) to the NZ government (comcom.govt.nz)
-report the hazardously defected car to the traffic department (nzta.govt.nz)
- start legal action (justice.govt.nz) against Adventiv Ltd to claim back my deposit.
I urge all other customers having been abused by "Happy Campers", "Adventiv Ltd" or any other company to report their cases to the corresponding NZ government institutions. Only if these receive enough complaints they will start to investigate and hopefully no more campers will be cheated and mistreated by a few very bad companies in an otherwise beautiful country full of helpful and friendly people
