Richard Alfred Leckner, ran away to sea in May, 1917 as he was missing his brother Theo who had gone off to fight in Gallipoli. He got a job as a cabin boy and the kitchen hand on the cargo ship ‘Tahiti” and after four years travelling the Pacific Islands to San Francisco and return he jumped ship in San Francisco at the age of 18. He got a job in a Restaurant at the corner of Market & Farrelly Streets near Union Square and worked his way up to Manager in 1924.

In 1925 he came upon 6 Green Parrot lampshades in Macy’s half yearly sales which he purchased and eventually decided to return to New Zealand. The Restaurant, named after these lampshades, The Green Parrot opened in 1926. In 1930, with the Restaurant well established, he made contact with “Eddie” Tefs who had worked with him in San Francisco and asked him if he would like to take charge of The Green Parrot so he could go to Auckland and open up a similar establishment (Palm Court Tea Rooms at the Regent Theatre). This move resulted in him becoming bankrupt. To assist him “Eddie” Tefs formed a company, he being the major shareholder and the four shareholders in the Green Parrot ran it. Eventually “Eddie” Tefs went back to the U.S.A and the Restaurant was sold to Tony Marinovich. Richard Alfred Leckner left Welllington on 18 November, 1932 for Sydney and got a job with Cahills Restaurant as Assistant Manager.

The Green Parrot’s No.1 customer was “Jack Davey” the famous Radio Announcer.

I came here in the hopes of meeting Winnie P. While he was not here, I could feel his presence. The smell of granddad's smoking jacket and vintage carpet supplements the complimentary white sandwich bread in a way that offers a thrill for young and old. One of the finest bathrooms I have visited this year. Quite delightful.

Nostalgic and homely. Massive portions and all the retro your heart desires. Old school service and complimentary bread and butter. This place reminds me of my folks - it's definitely somewhere they would have gone for dinner back in their day. The carpet takes me back to my childhood - I'm sure we've all had it at sometime in our lives! You can be forgiven for not being able to finish your meal because they are huge so if you're planning on trying the apple pie (and you so should!) then I highly recommend sharing a plate. I add eggs to the schnitzel and it's enough to feed 2 of us.

Iconic and nostalgic. Very very large portions. Would recommend the whole Flounder. The "Mixed Grill" is a challenge yet to be achieved.

This place offers good value for money. Good service, honest food. If you are hungry then stop here. Nothing fancy, just honest home-style cooking with generous portions. The restaurant service is all clean and good with friendly staff. The washroom facilities are situated at the back behind 2 closed doors. One improvement they could make would be to keep the extractor fan running at all times in this area.

Can't really fault anything about this place. It's exactly what it says on the box. Great steaks cooked perfectly. White bread and butter. This restaurant has been there since 1926. It deserves to be full every night. Not suitable for vegetarians ?
