About Tongariro Crossing Shuttles

The Myth, The Legend

Love, Betrayal, Exile and Regret…

In the time before people walked the earth, Mt Taranaki had as his wife the beautiful maiden Mt Ruapehu. This was a love for the ages, Taranaki provided for Ruapehu and cherished her.

On one such trip when Taranaki was away hunting, sly Mount Tongariro wooed Ruapehu and won her heart.

On returning from the hunt Taranaki surprised the pair in their betrayal and in a fit of rage attacked Tongariro. Terrific though the struggle was, Taranaki was eventually defeated by Tongariro and in shame and despair he left. He made his way to the sea at what is now the city of Whanganui and from there north up the cost to where he now sits on the western most point of the North Island.

On his way to exile he carved up the landscape and created what we now call the Whanganui River.

While doing the Alpine Crossing you will be on devious Tongariro, his rumblings are said to be his simmering anxiety that Taranaki will one day return to reclaim his love. To the south of the crossing stands Ruapehu, she still loves Taranaki and occasionally emits a deep sigh of regret at her betrayal of him so long ago.

Less obvious on the crossing itself is the spurned husband Taranaki.

When driving back from the end of the crossing there is a 6 kilometre dead straight piece of road just before National Park Village. On a clear day if you look straight ahead and then slightly to the left there sits Taranaki. Still waiting, brooding, perhaps plotting his revenge on Tongariro.  The occasional wisp of cloud from his peak a blown kiss to his lost love.

A better explanation than time, pressure, geology and plate tectonics I think.

Disappointed at the fact they state a number of pick up times that they will be there at the end of the track - though they don't mention that there will only be one shuttle - and that if theres not enough room you have to wait for the next one - which might only be an hour or more later. We were fortunate to be the last few people to get on the shuttle - standing up in the aisle, but people behind us that had been waiting in the sun for 30mins missed out and had to wait another hour. Seems pretty simple to bring two shuttles to ensure everyone fits if theres extra people. Other than that they were on time, friendly & kept us up to date with the safety of the weather/hiking & refunded us accordingly.

We booked our shuttle ride for 7am and were aiming to get the 1:30pm bus at the end of the track. However, we were only told as we were getting off the bus at the start of the track that the 1:30pm pick-up wasn't happening that day, and we'd have to wait until 2:30 instead. We got to the end carpark at 12:15pm and by 1:30pm there were plenty of others from our bus there as well, enough to make the trip worth it for the driver. We had other things planned for that afternoon and it was very frustrating to only find out on the day that the earliest pick-up wasn't happening!

Book with confidence! The bus was on time, the driver had my name on his list and was very friendly. Took about 25 min to get to the start of the crossing and the pick up was every hour from 12.30 to 5.30pm. After hours pick up available upon demand apparently. When I completed the walk the bus was there waiting and the driver ticked my name off that I made it through. What really stood out was that I received an email 48 hours before warning me about the cold weather and advising to wear suitable clothing. Well recommended. 5 stars!

Fantastic service. Driver was prompt and knowledgeable on the trip there. We arrived 2 hours before our pickup shuttle on our return and found other means of transport instead. We cancelled with very little notice and they were happy to give us a refund for the return trip we no longer needed. fantastic service!

The driver was actually a really nice guy. but $40 for two 20 minute journey’s is a joke. I think it’s the most expensive bus ride I ever had and on the return we had to wait 2 hours for the bus to arrive. My advice to anyone looking to do the hike is to use another provider really put a downer on the day because the hike was amazing!

It's is 25 nzd per driver. Basically you drop all your passenger at the start of the track, then you drive and park your car at the car park at the end of the track. And the shuttle then takes you back to the starting point of the track. That way, you don't have to worry about finishing on time, because you have your car at the track end car park.

Fantastic Service. We had up to date weather information from our driver the night before and the morning of our Trip. Ana was amazing!! She picked us up right on time both ways. All of our names and details were recorded and checked off at the beginning and end of the trip. Faultless!!
