!!!! ----------------------------------------------- SCAM ----------------------------------------------- !!!!! Me and me brother (18 and 21) went to NZ form germany to have some nice holidays. When we arrived at CHC airport we wanted to gather some information about renting a car. We wanted to find the cheapest Car rental company at the airport because if u are under 25 you often need pay extra money. So we went to AVIS to inform ourselfs about the prices (especially for young drivers) and he told us their conditions. As our english is not the best it took him much time to explain us their insurance system. Our problem at this point was that he didnt mention any specific amount of money yet, and that was the next thing we asked for. So we asked something like "hey could you give us a concrete price for a rental" which he responded with "yeah but i need your credit card for this". Dumb as we were we gave him our credit card unaware that he will make a reservation for us. (WE ONLY WANTED TO GATHER INFORMATION ABOUT THE PRICES). So he reserved a car for us and showed us how much i will cost. Since it was pretty expensive (and we actually wanted to see what other companies offer too) we told him that we will come back later. And now he told us his underhand deed. "I am sorry gus but you cant go to another company, because i already reserved a car for you". I asked why and he said "The reservation fee is 300$ (i think its was about 300$) and if you go now you would have to pay this." So he booked a car agreement. Thank you AVIS The name of the employee was "Arthur" by the way so be aware of him. Never again I will go to this company. F*ck you Arthur and your company!

Long story short: SCAM, would give it 0 stars if I could. I DO NOT RECOMMEND AVIS Long story: I was on a company trip, using my card and I would later be reimbursed by the company. Rented a car from Avis CHCH and returned it in Queenstown. Upon return I was charged Fuel Fee and Vehicle damage repair fee for damage already there. They keep your credit card info for these charges in specific. As for the fuel fee, because the vehicle WASN'T TOPPED UP; luckily I had the GST invoice of filling up, minutes before returning the vehicle; so after disputing the fee on the spot they dropped it. As for the damage, there was a scuff on the front bumper. I could swear I did not scuff the vehicle while I had it but I did not notice the damage when picking the vehicle up and signing the document. Later I remembered that while going over the damage on the vehicle for the paperwork, I was also recording with my phone the damage I was spotting. On the recording (done when the vehicle was picked up) you can see the scuff already present. After weeks of disputing and sending the footage recorded upon pickup to AVIS they finally refunded my $800 after the company I worked for at the time threatened to sue AVIS through the legal team they had. I guarantee that the damage is not repaired, but rather, still there, waiting to be used to swindle more people out of money. Had I been just a normal customer on holiday that had to return home after visiting CHCH/Queenstown/NZ I would have not seen that money back. DO NOT RECOMMEND. SCAM In the past, I used Orange Rentals, for personal use and I was very happy with the service, so I recommend Orange Rentals in CHCH.

Stay away from this car rental service. After 2 days of renting a car we had an issue with the power rear hatch, it simply wouldn't open automatically when pressing the button. This appeared out of nowhere, and nothing related to us. Avis got a service company to check the car at our own expense who confirmed there was some issue so just had to close it manually. We were expecting a call for refunding of the service company. Instead, a few days later, Avis tries to remove more than $4000 from my bank account without notifying why and what for. We had to call to find out it was for a windshield replacement (??!!). Avis has just lost a regular customer forever. Therefore - avoid - you risk paying thousands of dollars for a random non-existing issue without notification. If you do rent a car here, be ready with your insurance and your lawyer. Edit: after further calls and complaints, we finally after 2 weeks get an official letter indicating 'cracked WSC' with not a single additional line providing further details or proof. It also asks to fill an accident form, which of course, never occurred in the first place. Further calls and it appears they backtrack, because "windscreen replacement" has now been changed to "fixing a small crack", and instead of withdrawing close to 4000, it is "only" $260 . Finally after requesting it, photo proof is provided of a crack on a window without being able to see what car it is on, no identification, plus a photo date which is 2 days after we returned the car. Needless to say, the whole process is fishy and scammy, and so I would be very careful renting a car here. The mismanagement, lack of professional conduct and absence of transparency in this whole process is just astounding. I recommend doing a Google search for "windscreen rental car scam", and to take pictures of all parts of the car on return. And of course, avoid Avis.

Made a reservation in Australia and went to the branch at Christchurch Airport to pickup the car and there was a mix up made by the assistant at the counter. He must have been inexperienced and then and then another more experienced lady sorted it out. Got the car and went out. In the night I got a message from the bank about a charge on my credit card by Avis. My card was already charged at the airport. This is another double up charge because of the mix up earlier by the inexperienced staff. Was sorted out next day by the manager. Other than that all very good experience as always with Avid.

Scam alert for this agency. Do not use! VERY slow checking in. Took 45 minutes to work through the 8 people in front of us. When I dropped off the car after two weeks, I gave the key in at the counter and went on my way. Checked my credit card bill a few weeks later to find they had charged me $3,146.87 for a $484.66 rental! I called to complain and was told that they didn't have the key and needed to get a replacement. Well, for one thing, when does a new key cost $2,500?! But that's beside the point, I gave them the key! They looked into this and FOUND the key and refunded $2,250.27. But that still means they charged me $896.60, not $484.66. I called again and was told that I was assessed a cleaning charge of $411.94. I was incredulous. He said that you received the car clean and full of gas, you have to return it that way. I filled the tank 5 minutes before returning it. I'm no slob. There were no stains or damage. I removed all the trash. There were probably some crumbs from eating sandwiches in it over the weeks. I didn't vacuum it out prior to returning it because I've never done that in over 30 years of renting cars and I've never been charged for that. He said, "People will complain if the car they get is dirty or there is a delay in receiving the car due to them cleaning it out." But, since I picked it up at 1PM and returned it two weeks later at 10AM, I figure I dropped it off 3 hours in advance. Certainly long enough for them to drive it to the car-wash EVERY rental car agency has acccess to and give it the routine cleaning they all get. Even if the fine print says I have to clean it out, don't charge me over $400 to vacuum it! I am in dispute with them and still have no resolution. Based on all the scams I am seeing reported here, it looks like this agency has a habit of scamming customers. Avoid them!

My partner and I reserved a car with AVIS Christchurch Airport and honestly the customer service was fantastic. The guy was happy to see us and yet we had never taken a rental car from AVIS before. After a couple of minutes with him it was as if we had know each other for a long time. Our reservation was for a Toyota RAV4 for our family holiday. Though expensive our customer service guy offered us a upgrade to a diesel SUV to save money on fuel which ended up being a great idea at the end. He walked us through every charge on our booking and T&C's. Excellent service, excellent rental. Our customer service guys name was Arthur definitely will recommend the rental and your service Thank You

Warning... unreliable and just slack service, and we thought paying premium rates would be worth a try. Never again. We had our worst car rental experience with AVIS in Christchurch. There were a lot of screw ups with our car which wasn't ready on time. When it was, we then had to wait more, for roof racks to be fitted as ordered. No urgency, no concern, not really a single fk given by staff who didn't look like they wanted to be there. I wrote to AVIS customer service to make sure they knew about it, lots of emails sent, not many received. Last one is sorry we can't investigate because, covid. That was months ago. Be warned.

Great location for car collection and drop off right out the front doors of the terminal. Easy handover at the end of the rental period. However, this was arranged through the company so cost or billing-wise I cannot feedback on.
