SLOW! Takes 20-25min per customer! WHY?
Some staff servicing here was determined to sell extra insurance to everyone. Even at midnight!
At first it was claimed to me that it's mandatory to have minimal insurance cover in New Zealand to be able to drive the rental car !? Really??
Then I said I have chosen to accept the standard excess, besides I have credit card insurance that will cover my rental car excess in the unfortunate event of an accident did happen.
Then he insisted I have to show him my Insurance Cover PDS. WHY??
Just arriving at the airport I haven't got my roaming set up and haven't bought a local SIM. So it was very difficult for me find the insurance PDS of course. But I didn't want to give in or hold up more people waiting in the queue!
It was such an awkward and upsetting experience.
Finally the staff said he can release the car without insurance if I sign something. (Something on these lines). But wasn't it claimed as mandatory before ?
At the meantime the staff started WARN ME "we don't deal with any credit card company, and 1 in 3 rental car will have a damage that needs claim, HERTZ WILL CHARGE YOU $4000 STRAIGHT AWAY EVEN WITH SMALLEST DENT by flying rock hit etc."
In the end, I GAVE UP the battle and paid the insurance which I already had elsewhere. More than 50% of the price I was expected to pay.
Overall. It was very upsetting experience. Staff holding up everyone for half an hour trying to sell insurance at midnight. Very inconsiderate.
I've rented many times in Australia, booked online, picked my excess I'm willing to accept, pick up straight away never had such a difficult and upsetting experience!

β β β β β Very helpful staff at both pick up and drop off the car was a camry hybrid which surprised me with the range on a tank 900+kms will definitely use them next time I rent a rental car

β β β β β I usually don't do reviews but this time I felt like I needed to. So i hired a van from Hertz, everything was fine and all. But then the front windshield cracked overnight from God knows what and the funny thing is the crack is on the inside of the windshield. I explained all of this to the people at the counter and even called when I found out. But at the end I was still charged with the repair costs even though I had nothing to do with it plus it made no sense when the crack was on the inside of the windshield. So I recommend they change their policy because this is just unacceptable.

β β β β β Excellent experience picking up vehicle from cheerful staff member at 2:15 am on a cold wet night! Car in perfect condition. Minor issue with typo in invoice resolved with one email contact. Thoroughly recommend Hertz NZ based on South Island experience in 2018 and 2019. Rentals going smoothly matter more when with family!!!

β β β β β Made a reservation at the counter for a Rav4 for almost three weeks, after being let down by Budget Rental who didn't honour my original booking, and they were the company that seemed to price gouge us least. Was still extortionately high.
The car was in reasonable condition all things considered. Did the job.
Upon returning the car, I requested the payment of the car to be made over two cards. I was informed when initially renting to do this at the end. The person at the returns office appeared to be new at his job, and required a lot of help from one of the staff over the phone. I checked my bank account as I waited, and after a bit of mucking about, the payment was successfully split over both cards.
However, two days later upon returning to Australia, the full charge had been applied to one of the cards, as well as the pending transaction across that one and another card as requested on the return.
Making several calls to their support desk (with one option for rentals which goes through, and another option for other which goes to an answering service which never calls back) I finally had a chance to talk to someone who would sort it out as needed... Except they didn't. I now have the full charge on one card, and nothing on the other. Sour ending to an overall average experience.

β β β β β Great car and friendly staff, we had an issue on Christmas day and the manager on duty by the car pick up point (not the counter by the airport) went out of his way to help us, very surprised specially with car rental companies which usually just try to scam you. Recommend

β β β β β I don't usually write reviews but for this one, I feel the need to, as it was the worst car renting experience.
I've rented from Hertz many times before and was mostly satisfied. That is why I chose to rent from them again this February (Feb. 2020) when I went on a vacation to New Zealand. However, this time, it was horrible.
I had reserved my car for 11.00AM but things went quicker than I had expected so I got to the Hertz counter in the Christchurch airport around 10.40AM. The person working there took a look at my reservation and said my car wasn't ready yet and asked me to return at 11.00AM. I thought that was kinda unusual, because I had arrived early several times before but that was never a problem. But anyways, I returned at 11.00AM and she did the paperwork but the car still wasn't ready. She gave me a voucher that can be used at the cafe in front of the Hertz counter and told me that the car should be there in about 20 minutes. So I went to the cafe, got myself a drink using the voucher, and waited. She came to get me around 11.45-11.50AM, which means I had waited for more than 30 minutes, not 20 minutes.
When I went to get the car, the car was really dirty. The rear windshield and the side mirrors were covered with dirt. And there was a dead bug inside. I didn't want to drive with a dirty rear windshield and dirty side mirrors because of safety reasons. I asked the guy at the place if I could borrow cleaning equipment or paper towels so that I can clean the car. He said he didn't have anything there and I would need to wait while he gets them from the service station. I asked if I could get a different car, but they said it would be a long wait.
I only had limited time to spend in Christchurch and had already wasted more than an hour so I told them I'll take the car, get a car wash somewhere else and pay for it myself. He offered to send it to a car wash and bring it back in 15-20 minutes but by this point, I had concluded that I couldn't trust them. So I told them I just wanted to leave. When I sat on the driver's seat, I realized the gas wasn't even half full (it was supposed to be, according to the car rental agreement I had signed). If I had not noticed and had not notified them, they would have overcharged me.
They ended up giving me an upgrade but I wasn't able to leave the airport until about 12.20PM. In other words, I had wasted approx. 1h20min because of Hertz.
Later, when I checked the rental agreement paperwork, I realized that the paper said the rental period started at 11.45AM, although I actually got the car around 12.15PM and left around 12.20PM. In other words, they overcharged me. Also, apparently, when they are late, it's okay. But when you are late, you'd have to pay extra. How convenient for them.
I want to give them 0 star but 1 is the minimum so 1 star I guess.
So, to summarize..
1. Hertz was late.
2. Hertz tried to give me a dirty car with a gas tank that wasn't even half full.
3. I wasted approx 1h20min because of Hertz.
4. I couldn't leave the Hertz office until 12.20PM but they started charging me from 11.45AM.
