★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Great location and affordable price. Countdown and New World are all within walking distance, plus the rail station is just around the corner. The first hotel I've stayed that offer comfy blanket, TV set and fridge at the same price range. There's also a lounge on the first floor.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Wi-fi does not reach room 201. Pub smells like old beer. Toilet cistern leaked all night. Have to leave the Hotel via the Fire Escape because lift does not go to ground floor when pub is closed, but they don't tell U that. The Staff are very nice, all of them.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Wonderful old hotel with lots of history. The decor is as an old style hotel. We stayed one night in a room for 3 people. I found it very cramped having to put suitcase in the wardrobe and very noisy during the night with people racing cars.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Don't even go here, rooms are horrendous. Worst part of the South Island trip.. Rubbish Hotel, room was freezing, dirty bathrooms, heater was hard to figure out to turn on and then when turned on eventually all the heat was just one side no proper setting(got dehydrated). Wouldn't even recommend this place for free to anyone.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The proximity to the CBD and the clean though small & basic room didn't make up for our disappointment in the pub meals at restaurant prices. Blue Cod ($34) overcooked. Bland. The roast was very average.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The good: This hotel is in a great location. It's central and walking distance to shops, museums, and restaurants.
The bar/restaurant has a bit of coziness to it and the food is okay for the price.
Staff was friendly.
The bad: the reception counter never has any one there. This can be frustrating when trying to call from your room as you'll either give up or end up walking downstairs to flag someone down. It seems they same few staff running the bar, restaurant, and the reception counter and they are understaffed leaving customers searching for staff. They also don't have good communication with the housekeeping staff, meaning that if you ask them for something like towels because none were left in your room..... all they do is leave a note for them in the reception and hope they see it before too long. Walkie talkies would help with this.
Besides the staff issues, the rooms are small, old, very drafty (the blinds would sway from the drafts), and there's no sound proofing.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ "Alright" will be the word. No skyTV and no HDMI connection (upgraded room).
Location is great. Pub downstairs is great.
Wish they had a descent mixer in shower in upgraded rooms. Had a backroom before and showers were better...
But focussing on the positive..... It's CLEAN! and friendly!
