This map pin is both the best and worst of places in the world. The astonishing beauty of Milford Sound should be on anyone's bucket list. Would love to hike the track one day. However. If you wish to enjoy the incredible mountainscapes of the Fiordlands, do not do it right here. This is a place called Sandfly point, and the little nasties will absolutely take you apart.

Thoroughly recommend hiking the Milford with Ultimate Hikes. Be aware there is unstable stones in some sections and very high steps. Sandflies and rain are a given in this area. Good preparation and poles recommended

Easily doable on your own but you need to get the permit early as it gets sold out quick. Its a nice journey from Queenstown to the trailhead by road and ferry. You will meet up with fellow hikers with whom you will be spending the next 3 nights. The hike itself is like walking through a picture postcard with lush ferns and forest, climbing up alpine Mackinnon pass and back down to the lake. One of the most scenic walks in the world!

Stunning. I loved staying in the Dept of Conservation huts - simple and essentials met. The trees, wildlife and terrain over the 4-5 days - perfect.

If you have signed up for walking tours in Milford, this is one of the starting points. If you are hiking up all the way from Te Anau, this point is the end of your hike. It was so surreal waking in this rain forest, huge trees, so many shared of ferns, pure oxygen to breath, I have never felt so alive! I highly recommend that you sign up for a walking tour even if you have just one day in Milford. The only way to reach this spot is by kayaking or through a water taxi.

Amazing track, you are surrounded with great mountains and following a cristal clear river the first two days. The third day you hiking up to the passage and have a stunning view over the forest and mountains. While hiking down you see plenty of amazing waterfalls and also the highest waterfalls in new Zealand. We also saw a kiwi. So pretty cool and amazing track. Some stuff I understand afterwards was that you can hike to the first hut, without paying the expansive boat, but take a whole day. During the off season you can hike in both directions. But a amazing track. Not so hard.

So nice that there is this small hut, otherwise you will be at the mercy of the sand flies! From this point, we took the boat for the hotel.
