It was amazing to see that the tunnel was carved out of rock by hand. Truly an awesome tunnel. Well worth seeing and driving through.

Long drive from Stratford to Moki Tunnel (about an hour plus of winding road). The tunnel is narrow (single lane tunnel), short, yet interesting with some history to tell. The parking is on the left side at both end of the tunnel (from Stratford direction).

Great little tunnel for a stop about halfway along the Forgotten Worle Highway. There's gravel areas for parking at each end of the tunnel. Don't go up the 4WD track at the west end of the tunnel unless you have a suitable vehicle!!

Cool little tunnel. Wouldn't go out of my way to see it but a nice attraction on the way to somewhere

A unique experience, the only downside was the 16km unsealed road

Interesting tunnel called Hobbit's Hole on Forgotten World Highway between Whangamomona and Taumarunui; they say that inside is a petrified big crab.

Forgotten Highway (Highway 43) was the fastest way to cut from Taranaki (Plymouth) to Tongariro National Park. Primitive road, including potholes mark your 2 to 3 hour drive (150km). Some folks will actually spend 2D1N to enjoy the laidback and rustic lifestyle countryside. Drive slow as some corners are single lane, and the pebbles can make your car skid. The narrow tunnel is only one lane. Some areas nearer to Taumarunui will have farms, expect farmers to herd their cattle! What an experience. ps. why is there no Forgotten Highway Review on Google Map?

Tunnels are different and make motoring through them exciting if you like caves and stories about the light at the end of the tunnel. This one is long enough and basic enough to give you a thrill to get out particularly if you manage to get a clear run . It looks ancient but dry inside. I thought it was made with hand tools and explosives but information panels say some modern machinery was used . It is labelled Hobbits hole . It looks very earthy and basic but it's safe.
