We thought that we had booked a site at this place however it did not end up being confirmed and went to junk mail so we were unaware we had no booking in peak season. We tried calling multiple times over numerous days with no success. After an email we finally got a response to see our booking had been rejected. This made no sense to us as when we booked on the website it said that there were at least 10 available spaces. We had already transferred the money for the booking. Not happy and extremely disappointed that our holiday was ruined on such short notice. Hope nobody else goes through the same experience, sort your website out please

A very popular large family camp ground at Kai Iwi Lakes, northwest of Dargaville. Glistening white sand, blue freshwater lake. Boats, jet skis etc launch just up the road from the main campsite. (not at the main beach). Day camping possible also. But main gates close over night. Check the Pine Beach website for details. Sun protection required, either with shade tents/gazebos/umbrellas etc. Can be gusty even on fine days, so come prepared with tie down solutions. Great carparking for cars, RVs, etc. Bookings advised for campsites as it is a very popular spot. Public loos / showers and seasonal mobile snack cafe available. Camp has on site offices. Remember that fresh water does not provide the same bouyancy as saltwater.

Great camping ground for the old kiwi style camping where you bring everything AND the kitchenzink. Basic facilities available, no kitchen, but plenty of drinkable water. Facilities, especially the mens are very tired and really could do with renovation.

Amazing spot in NZ but unfortunately the campground cleanliness/facilities were a let down. There was only one male toilet that was functioning at the time of visit (Waitangi Weekend) and there were portaloos set up instead? Would happily pay a slightly higher campground fee if it meant getting better (and cleaner!) facilities. Also massive wait times at the office and not supe helpful service - maybe they were super busy and exhausted due to the holiday weekend. Besides that, the lake is a great place to visit and its gorgeous. For that reason only, I will be back to visit :)

Pine Beach Campground was a great wee gem right next to the stunning fresh water Kai Iwi lakes. The lake itself was busy because of great weather and being open to the public, but the campsite was more relaxed due to having to book in advance. As with all campsites, there was music and noise from the neighbours, but everyone settled down by the 10:30pm noise curfew. It has all the facilities you need for camping (fresh water taps, rubbish/recycling bins, dish washing stations, toilets blocks that were old but very clean, showers with $2 for 3 mins hot water). There was also a food truck with ice cream, burgers, fries etc. near the entrance until 7pm, but this may only be during peak summer months. Staff were very polite and made checking in easy, especially with sending vaccine passes, visitor information, and car details via email in advance. There is a 5 minute walk to a lookout over the lake which is worth the climb. Definitely on the list to go back to for a few days of swimming and lazing around.

The campground itself is busy and feels quite commercial. Out of the 4 campgrounds I visited in Northland, the facilities here were not the best (toilets / showers were humid inside and weren't the cleanest - but tbf that is down to individual campers to leave things clean). Also maybe we were unlucky but had neighbours play loud music at 730am The location is great (shallow waters for kids to play in and a pontoon to jump off of) so would recommend this place as a day trip rather than for camping.
