About The General Café
Awarded the Bay of Plenty’s Most Outstanding Café for 2017/18 and 2019/20, our menu incorporates current trends and cooking techniques with almost all of what we serve made in-house. We source the best produce we can get our hands on, using independent suppliers for individual ingredients. We pride ourselves on delivering quality food, with a smile day in, day out.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Group of 4. Ordered our meal and drinks. Drinks arrived staggered. I got my meal about 10 minutes before everyone else. So I waited for everyone to get served. Meals should be all ready at the same time. Food was good.

Had to ask to order and then waited over an hour for food. The food was good, but the sourdough was rock hard and couldn’t cut into it. Average experience.

I understand it’s peak time of year but staff didn’t advise the wait would be that long. Was about to get up and go elsewhere when the food arrived! Otherwise place is nice inside and good location generally

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Coffee was good but service was slow. We ordered 2 takeaway coffees but it took 20 minutes to get them on a non peak hour. Seems like only one person was making the drinks vs a bunch of people were serving. Not one to question their operations but the overall experience would have been better if it would be faster.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ If you're living for the weekend and searching for that caffeine hit with some decent food action, go no further than the General. I went on a Monday, so seating was easy pickings. Head there on the weekend and you'll be flicking the waiter $100 to get a seat. Get in there early for sure on Saturdays and Sundays to get their wicked Pulled Pork Asian Slaw Rolls, or one of their Beetroot Buns with Avo, chicken and Brie. Filll up those hungry teenagers on Pork & Fennel sausage rolls with a mountain of sweet treats on their counter to choose from. The toilets were clean and staff were super helpful. There's parking down the side but they'll be gone in a blink of the eye on the weekend. Yep, you'll be forking out an easy $100 for savoury, sweet treats and drinks for a family of 4, but who cares? It's not often in Tauranga that a cafe gets it all right right?!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Beautiful cafe and great location.Food looked good. Quite expensive though. Latte was very good. The filter coffee not so much so bad that I left most of it. Tasted gritty and stale. I think this was due to the style of filtered coffee. If you like good quality black filtered coffee definitely dont get it from here. The Croissant and Savoury scroll was very nice.
