Lovely falls close to Whakapapa village. With upper and lower track turns into quite a nice loop. Very much tempting crispy mountain water to take a swim or sip. Lovely in summer or good for a closed day in winter.

There's an abundance of fantastic hiking tracks in the area, but be warned it's alpine conditions. My partner and I set out on a hike on a sunny afternoon and 90mins later the weather turned - the clouds rolled in, the wind picked up, it started to rain and the temperature dropped significantly. The 90min hike back to the Chateau was pretty miserable and we were thoroughly drenched. The upper track to Taranaki Falls takes you though alpine scrub and a more exposed setting, but it is the faster route. The lower track is longer and takes you through some gorgeous native forest in the ravine following the stream.

Absolutely gorgeous! The water is always cold despite the hot sun. About 6km return walk (from Château Tongariro), medium-easy terrain. A must visit in summer :-)

Fantastic! This is really manageable hike for all ages - spectacular views - totally worth spending a couple of hours to do the loop track to Taranaki Falls. If you've got time & energy, consider going up to Tama Lakes.

A really nice easy walk. One half through mostly bush and scrub. The other over a volcanic plain covered with high altitude grasses. The falls at the halfway point are a great stopping place and the views are fantastic at every corner and rise.

Great walk through various landscapes. Average fitness required, some uneven terrain and a few steps at the end but we'll worth it. Takes about 2hrs and easy access from chateau area

An excellent short walk through the bushes as well as the open space. It's a really easy walk for about 2 hours return to see the falls. There is a toilet just before the falls, in case if you need to know. There wasn't much water when we went though, hopefully during winter it will be bigger.

An excellent track, partly in the open partly through bush and partly through more Bush along a stream. The track does undulate but with reasonable fitness it's fairly easy. Great views along the way. The falls themselves are majestic and well worth the 2 to 3 hour walk. Would do it again.
