★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Pretty standard DOC hut, but the DOC ranger Ross really made it a great experience. He has a wealth of knowledge. He doesn’t put up with any bs, but does everything with a sense of humor. He is real asset to the DOC and would be a great guide for the next generation.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Nice first hut on Day 1, Ross the ranger was great, funny and very informative about plants, birds, and reassuring which was great on the first night.
Drop your pack and head back towards the Clinton River for a chilly dip before you lose the sun, then head back to sort your bunk, gear for tomorrow, and cook dinner.
DOC provide gas rings for cooking, you need your own pot or kettle to use plus all the other cooking paraphernalia (or if doing dehy you only need to boil water for food, as you can probably drink the water here)
