About Jugnu's Little India

Wellington History

Jugnu Gill opened his first restaurant in 1997. Jugnu arrived in New Zealand from New Jersey, USA. In his working life he worked as a Systems Engineer in Information Technology for 2 large corporations. First in London and then in the USA. Jugnu has always had a passion for food and hospitality. He wanted to open a restaurant in New Jersey, but it was not practical at that time.

His siblings,  Dame Sukhinder Turner, Shammi Sandhu and brother Sukhmohan (Sukhi) Gill were already in Dunedin. Jugnu joined them in 1993.

It was a natural progression for Jugnu to help his brother with his business. Jugnu opened a restaurant in Queenstown with his siblings. and then owned and operated a Bar and Night club in Dunedin! A desire to branch out on his own eventually led him to Wellington.

Came in randomly with the kids after a day in town. The vegan menu is huge and everything on it looks so tasty it's hard to choose. The service was fast and pleasant (our waitress even recommended vegan wines without us asking). When I ordered a Butter Chicken for my 2 kids they brought only 1, knowing that 2 would be way too much for them to finish. Really really appreciated this. The food was excellent. 100% would come back and recommend.

Beyond amazing! Overall the restaurant has a very good vibe. Spacious, minimalistic and classy decor. Finally found authentic Indian style momos in NZ! I’ve been to so many restaurants and have always been disappointed. Everything we ordered was perfect and not too greasy as is the case with a lot of Indian places. The staff was also very professional and happy to assist. Would definitely recommend to any and everyone in Wellington :)

The main dish (Bruna Chicken I belive) was very good, I don't like spicy food and asked without it, and it was actually mild, unlike most places where it still comes a bit spicy. That surprised me positively, first time having Indian food and approved. The rice is average at most (almost gave 4 stars for that), but it is well served. The service is also very good, with friendly and helpful staff. Definitely recommend the place.

We started with the street food. A dish we’d not heard of before, pani puri. Little dough parcels into which you poured this peppery, spiced liquid served in shot glasses. Delicious. This was followed by the much-mentioned goat curry on the bone! And the also mentioned butter chicken (both shown). Bloody brilliant. I think this must be the best curry shop in Wellington. But I’m no expert. I recommend you try for yourself.
