Nothing like it ever used to be, since all the tourists showed up, litter everywhere, can barely take a photo without 30 randoms being in the shot as well. Definitely recommend.. 20years ago.

Amazing experience must visit but try not to slip on the rocks it could be harmfull and not to take down your head under the hot kersone water . Take some easy going swim wear no place to lock the stuff . Try to keep your personal belongings in the car . Rest it is safe to go but before 7.30 not recommended to go if its dark . I had a good first time xperience .

For something so special, it's absolutely COVERED IN TRASH. It's clearly not just visitors, it's locals hanging out here too. I have picked up a bag worth each time I visit, but there is SO much more than that. This time it was Woodstock cans and towers of pizza boxes, tissue paper, bottles, hundreds of candles (being a tidy kiwi is romantic!!), food wrappers, everything. It's filthy. Treat the land with respect or don't come here. We came across 3 Police cars on our small time there, checking for robberies, so we could hardly relax with our Ute out of sight packed of camping and valuable outdoors.

The water was amazing and was so relaxing. Definitely worth the drive from Auckland.

You're either going to love it or hate it. On the plus side the water temperature at around 36 degrees is ideal. On the minus side: the water stinks, well like kerosene; the water is not at all like clear water from a pristine geothermal source, it's a murky brown colour not appealing at all; and what's with the soapy foam floating on the surface resembling detergent? What's more there is a dirty brown insoluble sediment adhering to the rocks in the creek which are slippery and mess up your togs and difficult to remove. Access to the creek is difficult - steep sides and slippery footing. Not ideal for elderly or the disabled. My first reaction - this creek is an open sewer. Not recommended.
