About Whangamomona Hotel

Whangamomona sought its independence when local government shifted the local district boundaries to one that was in line with the watershed of the main rivers. Half of the Whangamomona District went from the Taranaki District to the Manawatu District. Some Locals were lucky and half their farms stayed with Taranaki. However, this did not sit well with the locals as most associate themselves with Taranaki. The stubborn streak came out to show that they did not like this decision being made without consulting them, the residents, first. Whangamomona residents made a major decision to declare their independence within the four walls of the hotel back in 1988. Whangamomona was declared a Republic! We celebrate 35 years of independence in January 2023. Republic Day celebrations swell the Whangamomona Village from around 40 people to around 3000 people. Country activities such as Sheep Races, Gumboot Throwing, Gutbuster Races, Whip Cracking, Possum Skinning, Hold Ups and Shoot Outs all take place in the main street. Presidential elections are held. Our first president lasted 10 years before taking early retirement. Unfortunately, the second president ‘Billy the Kid’ only survived the position 18 months when he died in active duty – ‘weed-eating’ on the town hillside. Tai the Poodle was duly elected in 2003, unfortunately 12 months later there was an assassination attempt on his life and he had to retire due to this leaving him in a severe nervous condition. Murt Kennard was then elected as president and was in office for 10 years until October 2015 when sadly he passed away. The current president is John Herlihy who has been in office January 2017. Our next Republic Day is January 2023 and a new President will need to be elected. Passports can be purchased at the Hotel to ensure safe passage through the Republic.

Like wow!!. This place was going on my go do bucket list places I had never seen let alone visited I got the chance although it was a very long hike from New Plymouth to here the road was a bit rough in place but to be expected when there have been race cars flying through there the day before I didn't realise we were on the forgotten highway till we come out of the gorge and oh my life what a quaint place or is that town I thought I would never get to see let alone be in this town... Wish we had time to stop in at the hotel and to check out the whole town but we were on a mission to get to Taihape so had no time to look around as it was getting kind of late and we needed to get to Taumaranui..then on to Taihape ...

Had literally the worst burger of my life here ? very expensive and no care taken in it's preparation. Crumbed 'chicken' was a thin, defrosted sad excuse for a piece of meat, cheese slice was unmelted and bagged grated carrots in a burger? Nothing was home made, no sauce at all. $22 excluding fries. Plus a 20% surcharge. If you are hungry, keep driving through to Stratford.

What a rort! Paid $190 for a room in the lodge and didn’t even get a TV! You get more in a hotel in a city where you pay $130-$150 (eg all the room facilities you would expect including a TV as well as access to a gym, pool, spa pool and sauna. Really can’t understand these businesses that have been crying out for support, but then put up their prices and offer minimal in return. Definitely won’t be returning or recommending!

We didn’t stay this time but have before pre Covid and loved it. This time went for dinner. Great food, friendly service but noticed none of the staff were wearing masks, even when delivering food to the table. Most patrons, like us, were elderly.

We enjoyed everything about our stay but were disappointed that it's a hotel and not a motel. We were reminded of this halfway through our dinner by the manager who informed us he would have to add corkage ($15) to our bill because we retired to our room and had a glass of wine on the balcony. "We are a hotel not a motel" he lectured us while we were still eating. We felt we had violated some unwritten house rule or had offended him in some way. I've stayed at hundreds of hotels across the planet and many "pubs" in NZ. I've never heard of corkage being charged on drinks you have in your private room. We would have been fine only ordering from the bar or paying the corkage had we known. All we saw was a "No Smoking" sign. Later I asked if we could get actual wine glasses (rather than the dusty cordial glasses that were in the room) with the corkage to which he repeated "the corkage is just for your booze, we are a hotel and not a motel." We spent $280 on a bed, two burgers and four beers at the bar. Was that not enough to be welcome (albeit "motel class") guests? At least the cat liked us. Definitely stop in for a burger or a beer but if you are staying the night but be warned that this is not the relaxed, easy going place you were expecting. (and hide your "booze")

Beware of the hefty surcharge - 20% if you visit the restaurant on a public holiday. I get it's a tourist attraction, so was expecting higher than usual prices, ($22 for literally just a burger on its own, before surcharge). But 20% surcharge is cheeky for any establishment - 15% maybe, but 20%? The neighbouring table was also discussing it. The $3 gravy add-on for the fries we ordered was about a couple tablespoons full, and nowhere near enough - couldn't justify another $3 to get more. Had to find extra cutlery and napkins ourselves. The food was yummy at least.

We called in four lunch to break up our Forgotten Highway drive. It's a cool pub in a beautiful building. Food was tasty enough. Word of warning, though. They were closing the kitchen just as we ordered our food at 2:15pm, and we did see some people try to order after us but left disappointed. So it's best to check ahead if you plan to have lunch here.
