Visited this iconic place for a high tea with a group of friends. It was a glorious day and the views were stunning. Hotel is majestic but a bit neglected and service was a bit lacking. The high tea was good but the vegan option was somewhat wanting. If offered, it should be on par with main offering, not just substituting fruit for the sweets selection. Other than that, a great experience.

Yes, all the reviews are correct. The Chateau is dated, under staffed and well over due for refurbishment. The food was average until the last 24 hours, our last meals were really good. Don’t expect fine dining. I truly hope that the management have actually taken this on board. The responses to feedback seem very generic. What surprised and annoyed me the most was that we booked several weeks before arrival, for five nights. We were given room 110. Our view was over a roof and a brick wall. Not things we wanted to look at for five nights. I returned to reception to ask for a change and after a long wait, we were given room 206, with views of Mounts Ngaruahoe and Tongariro. The room was available so why were we given such a rubbish room? The staff are amazing, so friendly and accommodating, but they’re over worked. Will we go back? Yes, but it would be great to see some of the feedback acted on first.

We booked the Chateau for our first anniversary celebration. It was a disappointment. We waited over an hour for dinner mains to be served, but tables around us who ordered the same meals got served first. Our dinner reservation was at 8PM, this was after the peak dinner service. They even forgot the drink we ordered. Food was fine but definitely not worth the wait. Around 4pm, we requested for the pillows. We followed up at 7pm then was informed just before 8pm that there was no available pillow case for what I wanted but my husbands order was delivered. Noted that the staff was clutching the pillow to his body when it was delivered, so the pillow smelled strongly of perfume. The room was dusty and the curtains were stained. With the reviews saying the same things, I would question the hotel's 4 star rating. The only good thing about the hotel was its location.

Booked Chateau Tongariro to celebrate my partners birthday and we found in the room a nice Birthday note and also a plate with chocolates and macaroons. Never stayed there before and it definitely didn't disappoint. It has an amazing charm and once you're inside it, it takes you to an amazing historical timeline. The room was a bit outdated, but that's not an issue. The food was amazing, the staff are amazing.

Really, really impressed. We stayed 2 nights with our 2 year old and everything was perfect. On arrival we were given crayons and colouring books for our daughter which was so thoughtful. Our room was tidy and spotlessly clean with everything we needed. Only minor negative was the walls were a bit thin but we weren’t bothered by anyone else - only worried about our little one disrupting others! Dinner and buffet breakfast both outstanding. Very fine dining and such an amazing experience. The dining room was very grand & impressive. Everyone serving us during all of our 4 meals were very attentive taking orders promptly, filling up our water glasses and clearing dirty plates quickly. Every single staff member we came across were so friendly to us and so lovely to our little girl making sure she knew where the kids playroom and movie theatre was (which are both SO cool!!!) We purchased the grab one voucher and you get so much bang for your buck it’s worth every cent. We we’re a bit nervous to come after reading the negative reviews lately but we were honestly blown away and wouldn’t hesitate to return again in future. Big thumbs up to all of the staff on (especially the dining room staff) working on 19th-21st April. Thank you :)

We loved this hotel - the location and heritage was right up our alley. She may have seen better days, but it is still lovely, just more in a lived-in kinda way :) There are endless walks right at the doorstep, the clouds lifted to reveal the most amazing views. The bedroom was lovely (ours had a great view). The evening meals were fabulous. It felt homely and special at the same time, we will return!

The Chateau is in one of the more stunning locations in NZ. At the foot of Mt Ruapehu on the Central Plateau, North Island. Even when there is no snow, everywhere you look is beautiful. The atmosphere at the hotel is peaceful and relaxing, with staff who are friendly and attentive. Guests can relax in the Atrium, and enjoy drinks and snacks, or even just sit and read a book. Dinner was delicious - a separate vegetarian menu with vegan options. Same goes for breakfast, which is buffet style, so is easy to adjust for vegans. Staying at The Chateau gives you "old world" charm, as well as all the modern conveniences. Thoroughly recommended.

Hotel itself is beautiful. Staff friendly and helpful. Dinner was lovely. Breakfast not so much. Plate was hotter than the food. Watched as people seated after us were served. Room smelled funny and shower was hard to stand in, luckily I'm not as tall as my husband ? ran out of hot water after one shower. Had a better experience at our $160 a night motel the previous night. But we can cross staying at the chateau off our list now I guess...
