Beds falling apart, kitchen gross, staff not very friendly, bad location and cold rooms. Communal area is decent but far better places to stay in Nelson!

Let me start by saying that the price for long stayers at this hostel is excellent. $110 per week, is the best price around, and the owner is very relaxed about collecting payment, so you can pay for this at the end of your stay. He will also write you a letter to take to the bank to say that you live at this hostel, meaning you can get your IRD and bank account sorted quickly. Unfortunately there are some not so positive points about this hostel. The kitchen is tiny. There are 2 electric cookers with 4 hobs on each. Only 3 of these work properly, and one of the ovens is shocking, and the other is not fan assisted and is also very temperamental. There is not a lot of prep room, especially when there is anyone else in the kitchen. The free pool table is cool, as is the free table tennis and the xbox. There is a 60" TV in the TV room with plenty of Sky TV channels and a hard drive with lots of films on. There are also lots of DVDs but no DVD player. The computers mentioned on the listing on hostel world are non-existent, but the wifi can be good. The bicycles leave a lot to be desired but they are free. The free laundry is a plus, though it is cold water only so some dirtier things may need to go through twice. The Kiwi Experience bus also stops here everyday so there are lots of new people.

Worst place I stayed in NZ, disgusting small kitchen. Only 5min dirty showers and really uncomfortable beds. Bad location compared to other hostels in Nelson. The free WiFi lasts for 30mins. Only good thing was free bikes, if staying at another hostel you don't need a bike though because everything is close ?

Nice renovated old wooden building, lots I character, downstairs common areas well done with pool and table tennis. Friendly staff. Slightly cramped rooms. Free laundry. Good location, although slightly out of Nelson.

Very friendly and helpfull staff ! We jump over the jetty together after 2h of my arrival, good atmosphere, lots of thungs to do if you get bored waiting in the hostel (free pool, free babyfoot, lots of boardgames). Bathroom clean ! Just a small kitchen but good enough for 3 to 4 person cooking together !

Stayed here just for the night and thank god it was just the night. The host seemed to have little idea of how to run a business let alone a hostel. The bed provided didn't have a ladder so I had to climb over another persons bed. The kitchen facility was tiny and couldn't accommodate more than 4 guests at a time. The location of the hostel was also very poor, 20 minute walk into the city centre. It's not the most ideal setting although perfect if you enjoy seagull excrete and the smell of a John Dory on your doorstep. The condition of the hostel was awful; if you're a spider looking to keep your family safe and warm then look no further as there are plenty of cob webs in the bathroom areas. Jokes aside, I felt it was more of a health hazard than an enviroment to relax. It's outdated, run poorly and needs knocking down before it collapses in on itself. I'm honestly surprised the Kiwi Experience allow you to stay here.

I really wanted to like this place but I couldn't. The manager/owner has no idea what he's doing. I had been disorganized and couldn't find a place in Nelson due to Bay Dreams. When I called I was quite surprised to find there were ample beds here and soon found out why. The problems: The place is really out of the way which is unfortunate, but not a deal breaker. The lack of organization and maintenance is the root of most of this places' problems. Soap dispensers and dishwashing liquid is empty. Soap dispensers are often broken. There are piles of half folded laundry in strange places at 6pm. Linen and bedding is okay but a mismatch of colors which adds to the disheveled feel of the place. Bathmats? Nope, beach towels. The showers and kitchen lacks proper unblocked/clean ventilation. The real problem (partly to do with the ventilation) is how filthy some areas look in the kitchen and bathroom. There is grease buildup/staining and filth on walls, appliances and fridge window in the kitchen. The bathroom roof is covered in mildew/mould. There is a buildup of disgusting filth in some bathroom/kitchen corners. Most of these problems could be resolved by having a specific cleaning schedule for some of those corners. There are some positives: Cheapest place in town by $5, Owner/manager is super chill and laid back, really spacious and unique "decor". I really hope this place cleans up - the manager is quite likeable. In the meantime, just go somewhere else and pay the extra $5.
