★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Truck hired was ragged and poorly maintained. There was no run down on the vehicle features for the less initiated (not me) but it did take a bit to find that the engine had a manual choke to assist engine warm up on cold conditions.
Steering wheel shook violently at 80km/h. Overall cost of hire was prohibitively expensive, no furniture blankets offered as with previous USAVE hires. Hand trolley / other moving accessories not offered or appeared to be available.
The overall experience could be more likened to borrowing the truck off a mate than a professional hiring business.
I was however given a free ride in an electric vehicle to a location nearer to where I parked.
So the problem is not the staff, but the process, price and assets of USAVE.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We specifically requested an automatic 21 cubic meter truck and told them not to confirm unless this was available, they confirmed the booking. We went to pick it up and there were only 10 cubic meter automatic trucks available. The guy said they do not read the comments section when bookings are made. Our move took 4 hours longer than needed. Further to this the truck had a broken tail light and was not road worthy. We were also told that our $500 bond that we had to pay (which we were not told about) would be paid after the public holidays. We still have not got it back. Terrible service and more interested in a quick buck than good service for customers. Will not be returning.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I had a great experience with the Christchurch office. I rented a mazda demio and GPS for about 3 weeks. The price was quite low considering the car was fairly new. I had to call once and also had a great experience with them over the phone. Returning the car was straight forward - had no problems. They even offered to drive me home because it was raining outside.
Overall excellent service!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I don't usually review negative experiences but make an exception this time. 1 star is too high. USAVE claim: "Professional business with friendly staff." but I found this is far from the truth. Their PR is abysmal.
I phoned the Christchurch number and got a woman with a South African accent who said she was in Auckland. I wanted to talk to someone in Christchurch, not Auckland.
I just wanted to get an idea of how much they charge to rent their largest van that can be driven on a car licence in January. Pretty simple. She said you can drive trucks on a car licence, something I doubt.
Then she refused to say how much it would cost until I provided a date. It is something I don't know yet, and I certainly didn't want her booking me a van before I know.
When I said I want to talk to someone in Chch she said they don't have a phone. Really? how weird! When I said I don't know the date yet she hung up! Basil Fawlty is a paragon of virtue compared to this lady!

Don't know how there can be so many bad reviews for Usave. Might be mainly Auckland branches with Auckland customers ;D
Anyway, I did book a truck online for 24 hours to move a household with 3 kids to a new home. All the costs were clearly stated on the website and the booking process. I estimated a total of around $ 180 (without Diesel) with hire cost, $20 insurance and roughly the kilometers I'll drive and expected $200, as there is always something.
The total costs were actually $ 183 after all and I filled up around $ 17 worth of Diesel. A very good price for a moving truck for 24 hours.
Could have had another hire company closer to me, which would have cost around $ 240 for only 5 hours !
Furthermore the pickup and return was easy and fast, the stuff as friendly and professional as it can be and the truck was in perfect working order.
Thank you and if I need a truck again I surely know I'll choose Usave again.

We rented a furniture moving truck from Christchurch to Taupo. At no point were we explained that renting this vehicle would run at a rate of .54c per KM! I only realized this when I had made it to Taupo and carefully went over the conditions of Hire... Over 600kms away from home
I don't want to say that they were misleading with this Information but it is certainly hard to find any concrete information and it certainly wasn't explained to me. This meant that we paid more in Diesel tax then rental fees ? it cost us $821.00 in mileage alone. Which makes no sense when you can buy 1000kms on line for $200
When I returned the vehicle and advised the receptionist I was going to withhold repaying the final amount until I scould speak to someone more senior and make a complaint he agreed. A couple of hours later I noticed the money had been taken out of my account anyway ..
I would advise against renting with this company

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We needed a van on short notice, called the 0508 number that transferred us to Auckland to someone without a clue. Went down to the shop instead and Hannah was amazing at getting us a van on such short notice in such a friendly and 'no-problem-at-all' mentality.
