About National Park Alpine Lodge

In September 1887 the sacred mountain peaks, Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro were gifted to the people of New Zealand by the Paramount Chief of Ngati Tuwharetoa, Horonuku Te Heu Heu Tukino, thus ensuring their protection for all people for all time. This gift formed the nucleus of Tongariro National Park, New Zealand's First National Park and a dual World Heritage Area.

Whakapapa Ski Area is located on the northern slopes of Mt Ruapehu which are the traditional lands of the Ngati Tuwharetoa people. The upper slopes are within the original gifted area. Turoa Ski Area is located on the southern slopes of Mt Ruapehu which are the traditional lands of the Ngati Rangi and Ngati Uenuku people.

With the largest lift accessed terrain, the highest lift in New Zealand and a massive 722m vertical descent; Mt Ruapehu provides MORE terrain, MORE choice and MORE freedom. One Mt Ruapehu lift pass gives you access to both Whakapapa and Turoa Ski Areas.

The have new owners, and they are great!! The place isn't the best but they are upgrading at the moment and I really have hope on them! Beautiful stay and It's really close to the Tongariro. Would recommend if you're doing the alpine crossing.

We came here after doing the Tongariro Crossing and fortunately there were 3 parking lots available for our group. There's a small shop in front where you can buy food, drinks and even some hiking gear. The toilets and showers are very private ones. The kitchen is super well equipped with so much stuff and the cooking is very fast. You can relax and eat in the cozy dining room. There's very good free wifi and lots of plugs in the house. Would definitely recommend! ??

I stayed 1 month at the Alpine Lodge (National Park village)while working at the National Park Hotel. From the very first moment I felt homy there. The living/dining room has a nice couch area and a few tables. By good weather this room is full of sunlight. The kitchen is very well equipped with 2 OVENs?and a FRIZZER which is not so common by most of the hostels. There is also a laundry room with 2 waschingmachines and plenty of clothes drying rack outside. There are a lot of choice about showers and toilets (some in the main building, some outside, some whole bathrooms shower+sink you can lock for yourself!!!). The hostel is very clean (definitely best showers I ever had in a hostel) and Joy gives her best to keep it like this through the whole day while working on the afternoon&evening at the attached shop (Joy’s dairy). The shop has almost everything you need and is very convenient. As a long term stayer I had the luck to have a own bedroom: bed with comfy duvet (it can be very cold at night in the national park), enough storage with some drawers and shelves. The tongariro crossing shuttle stop is just across the street. Joy manage the hostel and the shop all by herself with an awesome energy. She is helpful at anytime, she cares a lot and always try to let the stay be as best as possible for her guests. Thank you for this great experience!!! I will definitely come again and highly recommend this place if after a long travel time you need a “home feeling”.

I have had a great stay in the Alpine Lodge. There a lot of bathrooms which are renovated and the showers a modern and clean, the kitchen is very big, so many people could cook at the same time and the kitchen is very well equipped. In general the whole lodge has everything you need, especially as there is also a small shop, which offers everything you could need like food, drinks and other daily needs. It is the perfect location to stay for the crossing. I stayed a few weeks, because I worked at the National Park. The owner is super friendly and helpful. I felt very welcomed and would recommend the lodge for shortterm as well as for a longterm stay.

I stayed at the single room. It was very pleasant for my budget. The lady at the receptionist was nice.

I stayed here while I worked for 4 months in national park and joy made this lodge my home away from home. Couldn’t not recommend her enough. Lodge is cleaned daily and joy is very warm and welcoming. Any time I’m back in national park I will be staying here.

I spent a couple of nights at the Lodge before walking the Ruapehu Round the Mountain circuit and thoroughly enjoyed my stay. The accommodation is simple, clean and tidy, and all at a very reasonable price. The kitchen and bathroom facilities were perfect for what I needed. There was always plenty of hot water in the showers, and the kitchen, along with all the cooking equipment you could need, has free tea and coffee available anytime. Joy's dairy is well-stocked and reasonably priced, perfect for back packers, hikers and skiers wanting the basics before heading out. Joy was a pleasure to deal with and provided excellent service. I recommend the Alpine Lodge as great value budget accommodation.
