Have both of the back tyres replace on my second days of rental. One gone flat and the other about to burst. Waste time and our risk of life on worn out tyres. Car condition was bad as it leak water internally when it rain. Regret renting it and was lucky to make it back.

What a fantastic experience! We hired the lucky rover 'FST345' which handled the narrow roads and hills well. It was clean and had everything we needed plus more. The staff were quick, helpful and gave clear instructions about the van.

I rented off lucky rental for 15 days in New zealand. We didn't complete our trip because the radiator broke, our BRAKES FAILED causing us to crash. Luckily we were not seriously injured. Which they blamed us for and wanted us to pay $900 for towing. They still owe us money for the days we didn't have the van after the radiator broke. We refused to pay until they paid us. Once back in Australia they ignored all our attempts to contact them. Oh and they advertised no older than 2003, our van was 1994. If you value your life DO NOT hire with them.

A bit of a wait for our vehicle but we got it within an hour. The small Toyota Hiace we rented had had a lot of previous owners a lot of miles on the clock, lots of love bumps and you had to slam the back door hard to shut it due to a bash from previous explorers. The cushions were a little shaded but everything was clean, worked and did us proud for 3 weeks. Recommend taking with you a mosquito net to put over the bed. Great value for money and we had great fun. You get what you pay for

This place was great! We rented a sedan for two weeks and it was our trusty steed-. It was a 2004 and had a lot of miles on it but ran great, you could tell they keep the cars up. The brakes were super new. Anywho this was the cheapest rental option by far and we were very happy to have the option. Because the car was a bit older and semi funky looking on the outside we felt safer about it not getting broken into. Return was easy!

Lucky rentals - thanks for providing a cheap and effective way to get around New Zealand! There was a delay in our "free pick up/drop off service" - was late by 15 minutes. But because we were on holiday, we didn't fuss to much. Once we arrived at the depot to collect our camper for the week, there was another delay - but they fixed this by giving us a free upgrade. The van its self was well used and did struggle on hills. We can understand why some other tourists had trouble with certain problems when it was discussed around the camps. The van proved to be tidy but cracks, tears in seating, staining and even food was found through out when we were given the keys, also the table was unable to be set up because of missing pieces. All in all, if you're looking for a cheap, alternative option to venture through the South Island, Lucky rentals will be for you. Word of advice, read the fine print and TOTALLY understand everything before you sign the contract...

Unfortunately, our rental experience with Lucky Car was the worse car rental experience we ever had (comparing services around the world). Stay away from this company! We have booked the campervan for 9 nights to enjoy our holidays on the South Island. Already at the pickup, we were not welcomed very friendly or had the feeling the service lady took time to explain us how the van worked, even though we told her this is the first time we were driving a camper van. Even though the handover was rushed, it took quite a while for us to take off as the main battery under the passenger seat needed to be exchanged apparently because people prior to us forgot to turn off the lights inside the van. After a good 1hour, the car was finally ready and we could leave the car rental station. As we planned to use as many freedom campaign sites as possible, we knew we need to drive quite a bit for the secondary battery to recharge and to actually use the water system, fridge and lights inside the car. However, after driving 5h the water system was still not working so we had already the feeling that something is wrong. We tried to call the rental station but without any success. No doubt, this is defiantly not an emergency hotline the company provides, and I pray for anyone not having a serious accident because it takes 24-48h for Lucky car rental to return your call! After 4 days we could arrange to see a mechanic, who told us that the main battery of the car was flat and actually even a bigger issue than the secondary one. The main battery wasn’t exchanged correctly on the day of the pick up. Due to those issues, we were not able to use the water system in the van for five days, besides that the fridge didn’t cool and we needed to throw away our groceries. All in all, we lost money on that, lost hours calling lucky rentals without success of reaching anyone, as well as needing to seeing a professional mechanic. Instead of offering us any kind of compensation Lucky car rental only refunded us 5 days the value of the car rental (excluding insurance or tax)., the 5 days we couldn’t use the van properly as it wasn’t functioning as it should. I really don’t recommend renting with Lucky car rental, as the only thing you wish for is a secure and working van. We don’t mind an older car model if it is technically working perfectly and CLEAN (another big issue). Attached some pictures of this very old, moldy and dirty car…. Better investing $200 more, having a stress-free and save holiday and renting with juicie, maui, Berlitz or any other van rental company!

We made the same mistake as so many others, thinking the negative reviews are probably over the top, but boy were we wrong. We were booked in for pick up at 9am, and left the yard at 11am, after being continuosly told the van is "right up next". We are now on our third day in the van and it still smells of travel toilet, which someone previously must have spilled for the smell to penetrate to badly. The bed linen, for which we paid extra is ripped and mouldy! The pillow, which wouldn't cost more than $10 to replace is held together only by safety pins. The car has 504,000km, so it's not surprising the gearbox is on its way out and constantly shifts up and down on a slight incline. This morning the lock of the rear door started giving up, which means we now can't open it from outside. I know that we went for a budget option (about 1k for 10 days). Another thing is, they advertise the diesel option as the cost saving option, but forget to mention that you have to pay a diesel fee (hidden in the T&C) which brings it to the same cost as a petrol car. Edit: we just finished the trip and the fridge stopped working as well. On drop off there was another couple just being told that their car they were about to pick up wasn't available because the mechanic is off and the cars that came back all had faults. The poor guys are now stranded without a car.
