β β β β β Great car (Rav4) that we rented during our holiday in Queenstown. Some issues involving alleged damage after return of the vehicle that was looking like a classic tourist rip-off. However after lengthy discussions with staff and management, common-sense prevailed as it was clear that the damage could not have been caused by ourselves. Good people and satisfied with the outcome. Some of the systems around checking of vehicles could be better from both the company and ourselves however. Would still recommend though!

β β β β β SEVERAL UPDATES BELOW AS WELL
Warning, if you're a tourist, do NOT use Budget. They will charge you after you've left Queenstown for damage to the car even if there's none.
My workmate who's American had this tried on him. Fortunately he lives in NZ and could fight it much more easily than if he was a tourist and had left the country (in which case it's much more likely to be missed on a Credit Card statement and much harder to fight).
Not only that, if you fight it and get refunded, they will still send a collection agency on to you many months after it's happened.
Crooks, through and through.
UPDATE 8 MONTHS LATER: just been contacted by another person (based in Asia) via Facebook who they've done this to as well. Told them that scratches on the car before renting wouldn't be a problem and on return told them that they're responsible for the scratches and taking them to the cleaners.
USE THESE CROOKS AT YOUR OWN RISK!
To our valued tourists, most New Zealanders are honest people, however these people are exceptions.
FURTHER UPDATE:
Yet another person has contacted me, they continue to steal from tourists, once they have left Queenstown, they charge their credit card with made up damage charges.
UPDATE AGAIN (March 2021)
Another person has contacted me, they've filed a report with the police about these con-artists after falling victim to them. Hopefully something comes of that. Apparently Budget head office doesn't care about these thieves.
UPDATE from Budget. As you'll see, they responded with "apparently charging for damage on vehicles that are left while staff are not in attendance"
There's nothing "apparent" about it. Cars are being returned in perfect condition and then Budget are charging ONLY those people that they deem to be foreigners who are very unlikely to be able to do anything about it, as they're travelling.

β β β β β Showed up at 8.30pm with prebooked rental car and they would not accept a bank card without my name written on it. I have card holder written on it instead. Been with many rental companies prior too and no issues. They tried telling me that other rental companies donβt do it either, really? Not born yesterday mate. Take your business elsewhere.

β β β β β They are absolute robbers. Try take money off you for sport. Con artists and thatβs the truth. Do NOT get your car from here. We were told itβll be 317 dollars for a car for 3 days at the airport and then when I went to pay she by passed the payment of how much they were charging me, gave me the keys and asked me to sign the documents before Iβd read it. Then I briefly scanned through the documents. I noticed the price had gone from 317 to 560. All extra and hidden charges. Then they told me to leave the keys in the drop box when bringing the car back. Rather than coming in and checking the car first. Probably trying to take more money off customers. #scammers

β β β β β I will NEVER rent from Budget or Avis again. (They are owned by the same company.) I was billed $550 for damage to my rental car without being notified, and the corporate "customer service" office's stance is that I signed a rental agreement, so they don't have to provide me with any proof that the car was damaged. I have no idea what "damage" they claim was done to the car, and to the best of my knowledge it wasn't damaged. We drove the car from Nelson to Queenstown without incident, and returned the car at the Queenstown Airport location. No one was there to check the car in, and I was directed to simply drop off the keys at the desk in the terminal building, which I did. I didn't think that a reputable corporation like Budget would bother to cheat me out of $550. Apparently, I was incorrect in that assumption. A year later they are still sending me bills for the additional charges.
I have seen similar reviews on this and other sites. I suggest renting from any other company. The conduct of the local franchise is clearly fraudulent, and the response at the corporate level is inexcusable.

β β β β β Fast and friendly service. Moderately priced and quality vehicles. Be sure to check the vehicle before and after use to ensure their are any claims for damage after.

β β β β β Very easy sign up and payment. Car was as expected. No issues at all. Drop off was super simple, key drop into the desk at Queenstown airport.

β β β β β Excellent experience with Budget Queenstown Airport. I have booked a vehicle for 2 days, both the pickup and drop off are supper easy. I left my neck cushion on the driver seat when I dropped off the vehicle, Budget has helped packaging and the delivery pickup so make it possible for me to book my delivery to Auckland.
Special thanks to Joao Vieira :)
Really appreciate for the help, because I have used to the cushion and it is hard to find a fit one. I don't think all rental company doing so, I still remember last year I rent a campervan at Maui and I left my favourite CD on the van CD player, but they told me they haven't found it...
